What type of backlinks to people actually make nowadays?

Hi,

While searching the forum for tips on what type of backlinks people are finding work nowadays it is pretty hard to find a consistent positve answer.

There is the answers that seem to crop up where people must just copy and paste a list of every type of backlink you could possibly make which is great if you want to know a list of every type of backlink you can make, but if the question is what type of backlinks actually work and are worth spending time making then that sort of answer doesn't really help.

Article directories - the general feeling seems to be they hold a lot less value nowadays and they want unique content and the same seems to be thought about Web 2.0 sites - if they carry verry little weight nowadays then is it really viable to create for example 10 unique articles to be used for the purpose of gaining a backlink when your going after a keyword with 1500 monthly searches?

Forum profiles and posts, blog comments, image comments don't seem too popular on here either.

The one thing that does seem consistently popular is guest blogging but this then goes back to my point above about it being viable to create lots of unique articles to backlink for a page focused around a keyword which gets less than 2000 monthly searches.

I'm by no means lazy and have no problem creating backlinks manually but time is money and I want to know I am making the best use of my time.

So the question is really what backlink methods are people using nowadays, specifically people aiming at the lower search/competion keywords?

Thanks,
Dan

    • This is what i am currently doing in the current climate: EMD Update – Are Mini Sites Still A Viable Strategy?

      I do tiered link building.

But if you want to go a completely white hat route. Create tons of REMARKABLE content on your site and get links from high authority sites.

By the sounds of it, if you are going for a 2000 a month volume keyword you are building out a niche site. You will likely not be able to get guest spots on high authority blogs, to your new, small site. I know its harsh, but its how the world works.

I would stick to the same old methods really if you are going for such a small phrase.

    • How does having lots of High PR backlinks to a new site look natural?

  • Press Release, Forums, Blog comments.. could be powerful link building methods
  • also you can try to buy some links on PR pages at very good price in your niche
  • Blog post links are up at the top imo
  • Hi Dan,

You will get different answers as there are different methods to achieve similar results in SEO.

One of my pet hates is courses/tips articles that list every possible way of doing something rather than the one or two that the writer is actually using to get good, consistent results.

For me, my main SEO approach is contextual links (highly varied Anchors) on pages (not sites) with high PR where the link is embedded within relevant, media-rich content and outbound authority links.

For greater control of these, I use my own private high PR networks.

    Does that look natural?

Absolutely not and that's why you need to bury those heavy lifters in a load of press releases, wikis, forum posts (not forum profiles) and other Web 2.0 links.

Also, as rightly stated above, look to diversify your traffic sources well beyond Google and the specific ways to do that are well covered elsewhere.

    • Thanks Terry! Thanks!

Got the answer what I was searching in the thread.

  • I buy high quality contextual links. Google love such links and as a result my site got PR4 (from PR2) after latest PR update
  • Terry is spot on. Contextual high pagerank links are the best thing since sliced bread. Its exactly why Google targets networks (like Terry's old one) and deindexes them if/when they get big enough.

Google cannot do mcuh about them besides manually deindexing them, and that proves how powerful they are. Everything else can be taken care of algorithmically. The right networks cannot.

I found one over a year or so ago and have been using the service ever since. Its my secret sauce to top rankings.

    • Would you be opening to sharing that secret sauce...although it won't be much of a secret after that? You know I had to ask.

  • Contextual links are the most powerful when it comes to SEO. Even after panda and penguin updates there no doubts regarding this. It needs to be mentioned that it's highly important to make the link building campaign natural. The more natural your links look, the more value Google gives to them, otherwise like it was told earlier it deindexes or simply doesn't use those links while calculating your website positions.
  • There is no need to make many links for a site, make quality links always.
  • my opinion = build authority backlinks only , not high PR but high authority base on seomoz authority score
