YouTube changing the way they rank videos good or bad?

YouTube seems to be getting trickier with the way they choose to rank videos. Now I have never really used that platform seriously, but what they are doing is interesting. On the site they used to rank videos by number of views, now they are going to rank videos based on the time spent watching them. This means videos will have to focus on quality and keeping viewers interested. Do you guys think this is good or bad? I believe it is good, because now internal ranking cannot be manipulated using software.

This is good for Youtube and bad for people who don't know how to make this change beneficial for themselves. You can still get benefit of higher rankings with Youtube, if you use your brain either a positive way or a negative way but both ways will get you higher rankings. Although results time difference will be there.

    Cheers!

For me personally I think it's much easier to rank on youtube than before. I uploaded a video yesterday and, within 5-10 minutes I got ranked in #6 for a fairly competitive keyword with nearly 9,400 exact match results. If you know what you do, it's still easy to rank in youtube...

        yup I agree spence.

Although there are some that abuse this, done correctly you will not be penalised, and It is taking a bit longer to rank, but still there much love in using YOUTUBE and good ole SEO properly.

Maybe now to get the most out of youtube we have to create videos that will keep people watching the video longer with quality content, this might be a way of filtering out some crappy videos.

I don't think it's either good or bad, it's just how it is. It means we need to focus on creating interesting videos. It also means we should try to make them shorter and focus on editing them more.

Youtube offers analytics so you know where people stop viewing a video. Smart people will learn how to use this info for their own benefit.

Great! Now when I look up something and see a YouTube video explaining/showing/reviewing what I'm for, I can feel a little more confident it is a quality video, and not some piece of trash. I look forward to see how this turns out for those that provide quality content on youtube.

they really want see if your video are good quality content, but more importantly the quality of you traffic. Too, many people where using crappy referral views to get there video ranked, but I don't think that will work anymore.

I should have seen this coming since Google started to factor in the length of time visitors stay on your website as well on their search results... Either way, good for content creators and viewers looking for solid content, bad for spammers and people who love to watch crappy videos? lol

I had a thought that they were doing it because they believe they can increase ad revenue this way. A video that gets watched to the end is preferable to those annoying video ads before the video begins.

I would love to know how they will calculate this.

For example, short videos are likely to reach 100%, even if the viewer did not find the video interesting.
That is what I was thinking. People would just start making thirty second videos.

This is why they will always base rankings on multiple factors. Although, the importance of the factors will change ever so often.

A little late with the news. Google has been changing it for the past
year. It used to be easy to rank a nonsense video by using the same
tags, title as top rated one. They have cracked down on a lot
of other nonsense as well. People knew how to shmooze the algo.

But this was a pain for users. They click on a video, and are very
disappointed that it's a junk video not even related to the title or
      promise.

Of course they had to crack down. Nothing new now.

They are using other signals, like social and whether the viewer
views the video all the way through, among other things.

Someone a while back had a pretty good list.

Why would it not be good? For the average youtube user, that is.
Bad for people wanting to abuse a system.

Stop trying to abuse or shmooze a system, and you probably
      never need to worry.

Seems to me google says that many times.

Personally, I think this is a great change because I can not even count the number of times I clicked on a “popular” video just to find out it was either fake or all around dumb. This will also tie into YouTube’s new “Time Watched” analytics which should help uploaders find out what videos are doing better.

I think it also evens the playing field. Keywords will not matter so much and people cannot try to copy your titles and leech off of the success of your videos.

Its fantastic for someone like me that produces lengthy tutorials.

After the first minute I lose 15% of my audience, but 65% of my audience stay to watch the entire videos and the average length is int he 15 minute region.

But if your a fly by night spammer making slide show videos - your doomed
