How would a website like this avoid being penalized

What I don't understand is how is Google going to penalized website with duplicate content. Okay for instance I don't see how because what about website like lyrics, quotes and joke websites. These website will always have duplicate content. In this case how would avoid being penalized for duplicate content?

    Lyrics are more syndicated content than duplciate content.

    Think about how you could take those lyrics and enrich the user experience far beyond what any other lyric site does at the moment.

    Display relevant information about the artist perhaps? Links to other songs/albums, event/tour calendars etc etc

    Why should your lyric site rank above any other generic lyric site out there?

    Your right. I'm just worried that the lyrics content will get me penalized because it the same as all the other websites. So you saying just add relevant information about the artist to avoid being penalized?
