a site that isn't like a content farm site with "UNIQUE" word content. A site that you can easily refer to your friends with pride. Not one of those sites everyone on this forum is building. Example: like your crap websites

I'm sure you will get several different definitions here. To me an authority site is one that has many pages ranked for numerous keywords. These sites do not rely on ranking for one keyword or even just a few.

Hey! Take that back! I'm actually working on a real Authority site, it's a lot of hard work and requires a ton of unique content that I'm writing myself, but I think it's worth it. It helps that I'm a real enthusiast in the niche I'm writing about as well. I'm already being ranked for keywords that I have never tried to rank for, and the main ones I would like to hit are moving up up up!

seriously? this is why so many people in IM fail

An AUTHORITY SITE is a site with good quality content on a particular niche. The site would generally consist of over 100 or more pages with various articles, all unique. There would also be social interaction from site visitors i.e. comments, regular guest commentators etc. The site would also have various links from other AUTHORITY SITES linking back to it. This is a general overview a a authority site

an example of an authority site would be Space and NASA News

One cannot build an authority site overnight.

Some of the important factors to take care about are: website structure, content strategy (includes type of content and content publishing schedule). With great content and social media promo a site gains authority over time. Though it takes time the ROI from an authority site is much much more than flimsy ' made for adsense' or 'filmsy' affiliate sites.

And yes it's true , with a true authority site you do not have to depend on emd...in fact trying to rank for a few keywords is not required for authority sites. If done properly you get traffic from hundreds of keywords ...even keywords you have never optimized for

I don't believe that all authority websites have high PR - An authority website is a website that covers all important aspects of a particular niche, is regularly updated and has some returning users. It also has a natural link profile and original content.

For me, I can call a website an authority if it has/is:

    Ranking on multiple keywords
    Quality Contents
    Quality Backlinks
    High PR Site
    Brand

An authority site is given authority= privilege by search engines like Google to rank high, it's is because it has decent respected unique content that is regularly visited and referenced as a Backlinks from other respected site in the SEO world, such as .govs, .edu etcc
Also Backlinks from popular blogs, video sites and other social media sites too
It can take time and lots of effort to please Googles algorithms, and a great achievement when you get to that stage.

an authority site has got nothing to do with the size. it has everything to do with pr. if the internal page has got a pr value, then it can be considered an authority site in a technical sense. being an authority, in the google's eye is that people would want to refer to your sites when it comes to the particular topic your site is offering. google looks into how long the visitors stay on your site. so, if you provide good tips, good info, naturally they will stay longer to read and your site will be considered an authority and get ranked for it.

An authority site is a high pr site but it does not necessarily mean that it directly ranks in the first page of Google. Many authority sites are not found in the top pages of Google.

These authority sites simply rely on producing high quality content in which many sites use to link into and refer as in their blogs or articles. In other words, these sites have a very high trust rating wherein other sites depend on what they have to say in their particular niche.

Authority sites get SERP traffic that search for the domain name (not necessarily an EMD). An authority site isn't defined by page volume, there's plenty of junk sites with thousands of pages.

Typically an authority site is a large website (100+ pages to 1000+ pages) on a single topic or single range of related topics.

Usually when people talk about authority websites, they are talking about websites that truly provide good value to their visitors, and not just spam&scam content.

Getting backlinks from sites that are seen by the search engines as an authority are close to being the sorts of links that probably past the most link juice, so they are much sought after.

A lot of the above answers are correct but the one of the major things to an authority site is the structure. Some are calling this Siloing. I am in no way an expert but am a member of

    as well as

http://wordpresssiloseoauthority.com These guys teach how to build an authority site also and have a lot of free info that explains it fairly well

Anyone that would like can also use the search option to find more here on WF about authority sites as well as silo's or visit either of the two sites mentioned.

Authority has no direct relationship with internal elements like site structure.

Authority is determined by whether or not external sources refer to your site as being authoritative by doing things such as:
      - linking to it
      - mentioning it
      - recommending it
      - sharing it
      - promoting it

The only relationship is an indirect one in that a good site structure and high rankings in the SERPs can lead to the actions by others which will grow your authority.

As Yukon has pointed out, one quick way of measuring your authority is by the number of people who search for your website by name (excluding EMDs of course).

jxam69, with all due respect you say "Authority has no direct relationship with internal elements like site structure."? With this in mind please read Google's mission statement:

"To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

To say structure has "no direct relationship" is like saying how easy it is to find what you are looking for in a book without a table of contents. Lets help Google give their customers what they want and watch your site rise as an authority site in return.

Google's mission statement or a table of contents has no direct relationship with authority.

A book can be authoritative on a subject with or without a table of contents. It's authority is derived from what people say about it, not how it is structured.

I repeat - good structure can help people to understand content, which in turn may assist indirectly in it becoming authoritative, but it's ultimate authority stems from what external sources say about it, not its structure.

I am in no way trying to discredit you as I am sure that you are you like the rest of us here trying to find the right combination to achieve our goals what ever they may be. Lets just give them our knowledge and let them use it as they see fit. I really dont think that repeating or arguing will help. Give "G" what it wants and "G" will give us authority.
