Clarifacation on NO Follows

HI All

I have a lingering confusion when it come to No Follow links. I mean I do get it, the link still leads to the source site if clicked but as far as search engines go they are simply to ignore these links and move on to my understanding.

However, what confuses me is the fact that when you check your webmaster tools in google, you find that all these NO follow links are sitting in your backlink profile as I have become more aware of in light of recent algro changes. Some have even been moved into sidewidgets causing them to display hundreds of links from certain sites. If they are not to be followed by google then what are they doing there. Obviously they were followed.

I always believe that I could make relevent comments on related sites with no follow to drive a small amount of traffic and not be frowned upon by google in anyway as they are NO FOLLOW. Is this the case.

Don't worry about that. The time you are wasting thinking about this issue could better be served by doing other things like creating an optin and getting your list started. Get the big picture straight first and sweat these details later.

Thanks, but I am working on the little big picture as we speak and spending time well but that doesn't mean I can't spare a moment to answer a nagging question. Knowledge is king and you should learn something everyday.

    Yes, very much so.

Many of us don't even check whether sites are "no-follow", because all that matters to us is the relevance.

I don't do blog commenting primarily for SEO, but even so, I don't believe that they have no SEO benefit, anyway.

Most search engines seem to ignore "no-follow".

Many people believe that even Google doesn't discount "no-follow" nearly as much as it sometimes claims: it's ambiguous at best, as you've rightly observed, above.

People who have already decided that "no-follow" backlinks are not so good for SEO may not be interested, but others like yourself who are a little more open-minded will find many threads here explaining/discussing interesting things about no-follow links: this one might start you off, and then there's more here, here, here, here, here, and so on.

Though, to be fair, I do think IMSince2003 makes rather a good point, above, too.

From my understanding Google doesn't pass authority from the no follow links but Google does make note of them. Meaning they do take no follow links into account when looking at the full back link profile for a site.

That's why you read that a lot of SEO's recommend that no follow be a part of your strategy when looking for natural back links. Google takes the full back link profile into account and they know that if you only have do follow links that you are most likely trying to "game" the system. Natural links come from no follow and do follow sites.

Google does not frown upon nofollow links. They are not counted against you. In fact, they can be helpful. Google has payed less attention to the "nofollow" attribute for quite some time due to PageRank sculpting.

I have seen several examples which indicate that Google does place some weight on nofollow links, but obviously not as much as dofollow links and they won't index them.

I have noticed sites in which their only backlinks with a PR higher than 0 were nofollow. Yet these sites sometimes have a PR of 1 or 2. So they must be receiving a little bit of link juice from nofollow backlinks, granted, it is not as much as a dofollow backlink.

Finally, at least someone who know's that it's "nofollow."

Quite a few people speak out of both sides of their mouth's when talking about
      nofollow.

Nofollow was to prevent spam. It failed.

Google has hinted that nofollow is now morphed into something else.
They stated outright that they will now not index anything via a
nofollow, but obviously they can index it via some other way.

Google admits without admitting it, that nofollow is lame, useless,
      and a complete failure.

I have said that many times, and yet people still call me a google lover.

      (off topic warning)

They now have a stupid thing called disavow.

If anyone would read between the lines, and I know many here
do, they know that google is relying on a whole gaggle of other
things to devalue a link. Funny, it's as plain as the nose on your
face when you think about it. But people act like it's 2005.

simply put here is the difference between NOfollow and DOfollow links and just in case you don't know those are the only types of links...

Both Add Value When Linked To Your Site, depending on the level of authority the site has you will have that much value added to your site. For example you can a DOfollow link from a site that gets about 100 visitors per/month and you can have NOfollow link from a site that gets 1000 visitors per/month , which do you think will help your site more , obviously the 2nd one, BUT don't get me wrong the parameter for level of authority isn't the number of visitors the site receives I just threw that in as an example.

So if their exaclty the same thing how are they different, a really short answer would be this.

DOfollow=adds value when Google evaluates PageRank
NOfollow= not taken into consideration when Google evaluates PageRank

So someone who has a low quality site but has all links from DOfollow can have a Higher PageRank then a really high quality site that only has NOfollow links , EVEN though that high quality sites gets a'lot more visitors , traffic , income etc.

In my opinion I don't give a sh*T "with a capital T" about PageRank it doens'nt mean anything when it comes to rankings so I wouldn't worry about it and even if it does play a role I can guarantee you that its very minamil at most!

    best regards,
    hope this helped

  • Do-follow matter when G is assigning Page Rank to your site and BOTH do-follow and no-follow are taken into account when your SERP ranking is decided. Post-Penguin no follows are very important to indicate an organic link portfolio. If you have a no-follow link from a PR8 site and a do-follow link from a PR4 site, guess which is more important for your SERPs?
