How to Improve Local Search Results

I'm looking for ways to improve local search results. I've been researching Yext. They will get you a number of paid listings that are normally $12/mo each for only 49/mo. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

What are some ways to improve local search results?

Things to do to improve Local Search Results.
If you are a business that has a physical location (e.g. hotel, restaurant, dentist, real estate agent, plumber, etc), you can benefit from local search marketing. In fact, one of the first things we ask new clients is what they have done to improve local search rankings. Surprisingly, often the answer is "nothing." This is good news for you.
Local search marketing is something that is catching on, but there are still a lot of businesses that are not taking advantage of it. This gives you a head start!
    What Is Local Search?

Before we dive into how to improve local search rankings, let's make sure we define what local search is. Local search engines take into consideration the searcher's location or geographic interest in serving up the search results. For example, a search for "best restaurant toronto, ca" gives me results about restaurants in Toronto, Canada.
These are all blended local search results. As you can see, the user has the option to go to the business website, find the business on the map, or visit the business's Google Places page.
There is a set of local search engine optimization (SEO) activities that are distinct from traditional SEO that can help improve local search rankings. The rest of the post outlines some of the most important activities to consider.

Don't hire other companies to submit your information to local search sites like yellow pages, and google places. I ran a construction business and they only put minor details in those searches. You or your secretary need to manually submit your business details to all the local searches. It takes more time, but there will be a heck of a lot more detail for your business on those searches.
Once you do this, google the crap out of your business. Add videos and keywords linking to your local town name or state. Doing this will get you on the front page of google in no time using a blog.
So manually submit your business to local search sites and blog daily and your business will thrive.

Is this to help with online branding? How does it help you be found for the keyword you're looking for?

I would never hire another person for local seo. I would think it would be simple. Try to narrow your keywords down to whatever city/area it is that local people would search for. For instance, you were running a pool maintenance business in Nashville. Well, for your keywords use Nashville Pool Maintenance.

OK, so then outside of local search results how would i optimize for a city that I'm not technically in? For instance, my address is in Kingwood TX (10 miles outside of Houston) but I want to be found in Houston. Obviously, Houston is a much larger market with significantly more searches.

Mention Houston in your site, for instance say what you just said "located 10 miles outside of Houston"

Then get backlinks to your site with the anchor text that includes Houston in it. For instance "Houston Plumber" (whatever your industry is), etc. Obviously go for several keywords or you'll run the risk of being penalized.

That will help you rank but the issue is bigger cities have a lot more competition and depending on your industry, your competitors might have hired an seo company to help them rank. So you might need a lot of backlinks. I recommend Social bookmarks. They seem to have a lot of power in ranking a site.

This is from my experience ranking local sites.

Strong local presence to make their website more visible to their targeted local customers. You must leverage Google's Webmaster Tools Geographic targeting, Select country with specific domain name, your website must be hosted within the country you are targeting, build up geographically-targeted inbound link and make use of local keyword phrases within your website content.
