When i m placing backlinks through comments on sites, then how can i judge a site which is spam? As backlinks placed on spam sites harm your site ranking.

If you are posting comments on a site that is dofollow, not moderated, and you see hundreds of spam posts, that is one way to judge the site.

That is obviously an extreme example, but it highlights some issues to look for.

There is no dofollow, and that has nothing to do with spam.
In fact, "nofollow" was to point to spam, so logic here, you
would never want to actually get a nofollow link.

Just because some fool moderates his comments, in no way
shape or form makes them non-spam. All comments are
      spam.

So, stop posting links in comments. Hard for people to give this
up, I know, but put your efforts somewhere else.

Take this further. You see a blog and comment. You are the
first, no others, or just a few, and think, "Great! I just got away
with spamming a link on a non-spam page! Terrific!" Well, fast
forward a month. Who's to say that blog is not now filled up with
spammed crap? Now where is your link in relation to spam?

I'm not really arguing if some are good in the long run. I personally
do not think it matters. Why would I keep playing Russian
      Roulette?

I value my sites way too much.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

You need to use your judgment. Nothing else can help.

    • Spam sites usually have little or no content, lots of comments that are irrelevant to the post and contain links, and many ads. In general it is better to avoid sites with poor quality content that are filled with ads and provide no value.

Site layout, quality of content, inbound links to the site, outbound links on most pages, amount of ads on a site, type of ads on a site etc.
