If one makes the mistake of posting a rewritten version of an article to the blog after the original article, would it be seen by Google as duplicate content?

    No.

It wouldn't be seen by Google as duplicate content because it wouldn't be duplicate content.

It would be either unique or syndicated content, depending on the extent to which it's rewritten. The difference (i.e. between duplicate content and syndicated content) is briefly and clearly explained here: Article Marketers – Lay the Duplicate Content Myth To Rest Once and For All - Internet Marketing and Publishing Blog

Once the mistake of not publishing it on your own site first has been made, there's no downside to doing that. It's not worth worrying about it.

I admit I wouldn't bother rewriting it, myself. I'd just post it belatedly on my own site, and get on with the next article. But that's just me.

QUESTION: If one makes the mistake of posting a rewritten version of an article to the blog after the original article, would it be seen by Google as duplicate content?
    ANSWER: No.
I concur with that on a certain degree.

On the other side, as far as quality content is concerned, I would not recommend you to buy sentence-level type of re-writes. Yes, you may re-write an existing and excellent content but don't re-write it on a sentence level. Keep the core of the story but cite different stories, scenarios, or examples. Nobody wants to read the same story over and over again.

I have articles on my site that were taken from Askmen.com and Menhealthmagazine yet my site ranks higher for those posts than their original sources. I don't actually know why it happens that way.

Is it a new site or you've been syndicating content for a while now?

Duplicate content issue limits only within the content in your website. If you have the same content outside your page that is not a duplicate content issue as how Google describes it.

That is some of the sillest comments I have ever heard. When you have content that is similar to your other pages or similar to other pages on the web google just flat won't show it.... so no matter what you want to call it you are being penalized for similar content... now if the content is very similar then its duplicate content... and google will flat beat the hell out of you for it.... so wake up... google shows you over and over that he will kick your sorry but for similar or duplicate content... most of the time if google can guess who posted first he gives that site credibility and the rest is penalized... hell you see it in every google search..

To put this google similar or dupe content argument to bed try this...
Enter this in quotes into the search box "MLS#2978780"

the results come back with the following statement:
The results say 23 results and they only show 1 pge of 10 and 1 more on the next page.. and then they tell you "B_st_rds" have so darn much duplicte content I just aint' gonna show it ... however if you want to see that garbage.. click here... but I am not going to show it on my own... so take that penalty and smoke it....

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 11 already displayed.

IF anyone has ever searched you have seen this a thousand times.... max penalty.

If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

some say that is no penalty... you got to be sh_tting me... if google won't show my page that is a maximum penality.. he might as well trash it... this happens all the time...

You're saying that Google won't show content that is 'similar' to other content on the web?

Have you ever heard of Reuters? Check out this search.

There really are people who believe that, apparently.

It remains a complete mystery quite how they imagine that all the world's leading news and sports websites are so high-ranking when they live almost exclusively on a diet of content syndicated from sources like Associated Press and Reuters, as you mention!

Not to mention why Google so regularly and repeatedly goes to such lengths to distinguish between duplicate content and syndicated content.

Your content must be at least 50% spun article in order to look unique.

Where or from whom did you get that? Did you mean a content must be, at least, 50 percent unique even after spinning it?

You need to spin your article to 50% unique at least to prevent duplicate content. Sources = I read many SEO books and 2 of the books mention that.

Granted that may be true, algorithm-wise, humans do not want to read the same story told with the same examples and words exchanged to their synonyms. This is the reason why we have turned down lots of orders that require spinning of content. It's good that a lot of people have learned how to control or how to dance with search engines' algorithms but it's always best to consider human readers. These search engines are only media. People buy our ideas, products, and services, not the search engines.
