A Noob question about FB likes

Hi,
I'm a bit confused about this. For this thread, please assume FB likes work for SEO. (I know there are different opinions about this but that's not the topic)
So, when people say to get FB "likes," for SEO, does this mean FB users actually go to your website and push FB's "like this page" button and then your page show up on their FB pages as a link? Is that how it works?
So all you have to do is get a button(script) and put it on the website?(and obviously get people push that button)
I saw several websites with FB button after I started to look for it, and most of them are for liking their FB pages (not the website). But I assume it is NOT what we mean when we talk about getting FB likes, is it?
I have a FB account but don't use it much, and don't know much about it.
A quick help, or maybe a link to a good information page about it would be appreciated .
