How to analyze the competition

I know the factors that effect competition but I am not sure what gives more weight.

For example I am looking at a site in the top 10 that has a domain age of 12, PR 4, 339 links to the page and more then 1 million links to the domain!

It is not optomizing for the keyword that I want to optimize for - so not in title, url nor description..
I assume it is ranking because of its many links to the domain. Does that mean that it is hard to beat the competition?

Thanks!

Yes. Branded websites will have higher weightage. But it does not mean that you can not rank your website/page for that keyword.

Definitely it will be difficult to rank but not impossible. Try looking at the competitor's sites and look at their weaknesses. User some tool like market samurai or SEOMOZ to check the competition.

But if you are going against the established sites it will take considerable amount of effort and time to outrank them.

I will say you have a good chance to rank if they don't have title & description. Add a lot of social signals to it if the backlinking strategy does not work very well.

Social signals = Tweets, Facebook likes, Google +1's etc

I have heard from some marketers that social signals are currently being considered more than it actually worth. makes no sense to focus on other techniques such as social bookamrking? it still makes sense?

I'm using majesticseo now, it's pretty quick and give a lot of statistic data.
As for competition i suggest to change link building tactic for more optimised for SM
