A question about Backlinks

It's because links within an article are more valuable than a blog comment.

For example most wordpress blogs by default make links no-follow in the comment section whereas links from an actual article on the site will be do-follow.

The links embedded in an article is much more valuable than one from a blog comment.

It is more for SEO purposes rather than say advertising, though of course links can drive traffic as well.

Thanks, that blows my theory out of the water about it being to make the link stand out more.

Why would anyone accept an "offer" to allow them to post on your blog for free? If you allow them, it is you doing them a favor. They should pay you.

  I haven't accepted any. I was just curious as to why they ask to do a post rather than just using the comments section to place their link.
  
  I have asked for examples of the work from a couple of the people who contacted me, and in a lot of the examples I have seen the links look out of context with the articles.

All things being equal, a link surrounded by relevant content carries much more seo weight. This has been my observation based on my experience, research, and testing. So, I'm guessing your guest posters may know this and are willing to provide you with content.

2nd thing -- a guest article trumps a comment link any day and appears "authoritative". Now, depending on the quality of the content, I'd welcome guest posts. This is also something you have a lot control over. You can require "X" number of words and even links.

I take it you mean (what I would call) a natural looking link (ie, a weight loss link in a weight loss article), as opposed to awkward looking ones that look artificial and sometimes aren't really related to the article at all?

Yes, Sole aim on internet marketing (doesn't matter whether paid or organic) is advertisement and then conversion. There are few reasons why people prefer to have links within content body instead of comments

1. Link within relevant content is much more powerful than standalone link (in comment box)
2. Most of the blogs offer Nofollow links in comment box.

A link in an article on your blog is worth 100x more then one in your comment section.. A while back comments links were worth a lot more but like everything once people figure out it works it gets spammed to death!
