Moving content to new domain

I want to move content from a site to a new domain. The old domain is going to expire soon so I don't want to make a redirect from the old domain to the new one.

1. I was wondering, what option in Google Webmaster Tools should I use for this? There is a Remove URLs option and also a change of address tool.

I've heard that just removing the content from the site will result it being removed from the SERPs, but I gather it takes a few weeks for that to happen.

2. Also, how about for yahoo and bing. Should they be notified or will the content be removed from their index soon after I remove it from the site?

  • Cooler1,

Your URL’s will be removed from the index automatically by Google (and Yahoo/Bing) however if you want this process to be expedited you can use the remove URL tool. Moving content to a new domain however without redirecting from the old URL will cause you to lose all your traffic as well as any PR that you had. Just and FYI.

This article gives some good tips on moving your site,

    Hope that helps,

Search engines automatically remove dead or N/A URLs , You don't need to do anything. I am just wondering why you don't want to redirect (assuming 301s)?
Personally, I believe it's better to redirect old URLs to new old (if you want to pass link juice from old to new and drive your existing traffic)

I thought that when you redirect from an old domain, you still have to have the old domain registered. My old domain expires soon.

Another thing is. The old domain was affected by penguin, so wouldn't redirecting also cause the penguin effect on the new domain?

Yes you can't redirect an expired domain, that's what you would normally do when shifting domains, redirect the old one to the new one but if you intend on letting it expire, that's not an option.

Once the domain expires, it's going to get de-indexed pretty shortly after that.

However, I'm unsure about your strategy of re-using the same content. Once your domain expires, any other domain which has had your content scraped (there quite a few scraper sites that just exist from auto-copying of content) could possibly rank for those terms and have authority over that content even before you put up your new site. It's a rare and hypothetical situation though but I would still recommend, if you have the time, to rework the content to a certain extent.

In that case, would it be better to use the change of address tool in GWT, so if the content was elsewhere then Google would know that it has moved to a new domain from where it was originally posted?
