do subdomains get ranked

I have spent all of my time seoing for a subdomain for example keywords.google.com

I have never once added content to the actual domain.
Is is a SEO don't? if so. Im in trouble.

  • Yes subdomains get ranked. About.com has hundreds of them that are all ranked. Whether subdomains are right for you or not I can't say but they do get ranked.

    • Lots of big sites, like the aforementioned about.com, zap2it, go.com,
      even wikipedia, use subdomains to the max.

      Funny thing with about.com. They use subdomains probably the same
      way you want to. And, I might add, kind of against the grain.

      Subdomains were really for complete separate entities from the main site.
      Like with go.com, as in disney.go.com, espn.go.com, etc. About.com
      uses it for just another main category. But, works for them.

      It really should not be used for subpages on most sites. It gets no
      love from the main domain either. You will need to do the usual SEO
      for each subdomain as if it were another site.

      BTW, just thought of something funnier. www. is a subdomain
      of your main domain, although some argue it can't be unless it's
      set up to be a subdomain. But that does not make any real sense.
      If it's there, technically it's a subdomain.

      I don't know what that means. ESPN, Disney, wikipedia, zap2it...just don't
      rank for anything except low comp keywords? Since when? You obviously have
      never heard of about.com, or maybe wherever you live there is no
      answers.yahoo.com? Mail.google.com? How about digital point? They don't
      rank with forums.digitalpoint.com?

      The truth is out there, people.

  • Yes. As long as it has links in it. However, it only ranks in very low competitive keywords. You main focus must be the pages within your main website.

  • thanks guys for taking the time to help out. Now I have a bigger issue. SEO in general. I guess i've been doing it all wrong.
  • I always have figured that subdomain would rank the same way that the main site would, I dont see any reason why google would try to penalize you for using subdomains... that wouldnt make sense.
  • Yes sub domain are ranked but for all your website should ranked first. Informative content and tons of visitors helps your sub domain well ranked.

    Based on this, sub domains do get benefit from the main domain?
  • Definitely Sub domains will get ranked. And if you really want rank them then use sub domain according to your product. For ex- suppose you have a gift basket website. giftbasket.com and you want to promote birthday gift basket and holiday gift basket then instead using money sites use different sub domains for both keywords like giftbasket.comslashbirthdaygiftbasket and giftbasket.comslashholidaygiftbasket.... It will be more good .
