Google's New "Link Disavow Tool"

After a few months of repetitive announcements, Google finally unveiled its "Link Disavow tool" last month, which gives webmasters the ability to report spammy backlinks pointing to their site and have Google disavow them.

There are rumors that Google intends to analyze the data gathered by the tool and use it as a ranking signal.

Should data from the "link disavow tool" be exploited to rank sites in Google?

I wonder what happens if someone, for whatever reasons, decides to disavow a link from my site.

What do you think?

Be Careful about this tool, this look more a spammer trap (and for discovery link spam creation patterns) and some "good webmasters" could be affected by this operation.

If they had all the information they needed they wouldn't have needed to create a disavow tool, they would have simply ignored links they think are bad. Google is fishing for bad links.

Meh this won't help Google the way that everyone think it will. If anything they'll use the data about websites to help update their algorithm on low quality spammy sites but no, this won't be used to hurt peoples rankings directly.

Most of the websites being disavowed are already low quality anyways.

I read it's a 2 phase thing, first use the Disavow tool, then file for reconsideration and then you should get your rankings back (if you have any good links left after that).

That's the thing yes, for most IM'ers it's totally useless as they most probably only have links made with software.

However, I do think it's a good way to level the anchor txt.

Does this someone have a link from your site? If he/she doesn't, how can he/she disavow it? Well, unless you've been linking out left and right...

It gonna be very usual scenario if you are not capable enough to segregate (or identify) low quality links

Use disavow tool only when you are sure about your backlinks quality

I have no inside information, so all that follows is just a guess of how they might use the info...

If you were Google how would you use info from the tool

    Situation #1:

If site A disavows a link from site X

This tells Google almost nothing about A or X, other than the owner of A thinks X might be a spammy site. So I doubt there is much info Google can get from them in terms of ranking A or X

    Situation #2:

However if sites A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, etc. all disavow links from site X, this tells you a whole bunch of webmasters think X is a spammy site, and therefore X probably is a spammy site, and therefore X should probably be lowered in ranking.

    So...

    A. In other words, the logical way for Google to use this info isn't to boost the disavower, but to collect lots of info about disavowees, and potentially reduce the ranking of the disavowees.

In other words, I would expect Google would use the info to help locate spammy sites, rather than boost sites linked from spammy sites.

If you want to provide free labour to Google to spot spammy sites, then go ahead, otherwise it seems a waste of time to me.

    B. I would be more worried about other sites disavowing you, than who you disavow.
