This might be a noobish question, but how do you get a wiki backlink.

People always talk about them, but how do you get them and are they effective?

Thanks

  • Don't listen to people you hear talking about them. Wiki links are worthless.

If you get a link from Wikipedia, that's awesome. Great link. People somehow twisted that into Google loving all wiki links, which simply isn't true.

...now just wait for the wiki link sellers to see this thread and start defending them...

  • To get backlink prospects, you'll have to scour twitter, blogger directories, and probably do a lot of grunt work. It will be worth it for the click traffic alone. Click traffic? Yes, you will be amazed at the click traffic you will get from Wikipedia. People really do click through those resource links.
  • wiki links will help you as long as they are on topic just like any other link. Best to do a search for wiki in your niche and see what you can contribute to as it will help your overall backlinks.

    • Any link helps as long as it is indexed. Wiki's are generally no follow but they are hard to index. Wiki's on high PR EDU blogs however are extremely effective. But they have to be done manually rather than automated. Most wiki's are spammed to death now as the lists are the same for most of the tools. Bud do a search in google for your keyword + wiki and some will allow you to create an account and post. Unique content will help you out so write a specific and informative post.
  • Yes Wiki Links are no-follow and worthless. I got many of them with some original content but in vain, no RESULTS.
  • I guess wiki links has become no-follow..........

Wiki poster or wiki bomber software and spam wiki links.
  • If there is a tool that automates the efforts you can be sure that it is worthless. At least when it comes to backlinks.

    • What is the point of bumping an old thread with ONE line reply? "11-06-2012, 05:36 AM".

    • I think if you are in search of Wiki based sites submission software WikiRobot is something which is the best at the moment for the purpose.

As all says wiki links really donot worth as they are mostly nofollow but i have personally seen many websites use these as for link diversity purpose.
  • I know wiki is top pr site as well as everyday many visitor visited there why it is worthless.

He's talking about DIY wiki sites, not Wikipedia. Anyone can build a wiki site, most are junk.
  • wiki links are total useless.. only some quality wiki links can help in SEO..
  • Wiki links only work if they are on a quality wiki. So in effect, your efforts might be better spent getting quality links because a quality link on a non - wiki site is worth more than a non quality wiki link! Does that make sense?
  • Do you mean a Wikipedia (or other well-established Wiki platform site) backlink? Or are you referring to generic wikis that are choc full of other unrelated backlinks, spammy content etc?

Getting a Wikipedia backlink is great - if you can do it properly without coming across as a spammer. However, I wouldn't bother at all with those "get 10,000 killer wiki backlinks" packages, as these will probably come across to Google as being spammy and offer little value.

The only exception is if you're into tiered link building, in which case they might be useful.
