I tried to find this by searching but didn't find much that was helpful so I will ask here.

I finished my website on Saturday (November 3rd) and have been checking it daily. Wasn't ranking even in the first 1000 pages on Google and was thinking it would take a while and even then that I would start ranking around 900s or maybe 800s.

Well I checked today (November 5th) and suddenly I am ranking at 309. Is that average for a site? Also when I run my site through Ahrefs it shows I have a total of 20 backlinks in the stats along the left but then the backlink graph shows I have only 5. Not really sure how to read that thing.

Anyway I am new to all this so I appreciate any input.

The rate is dependent on the competition of the niche and the quality of your backlinks.

Quality over quantity. High PR is usually better, as long as the links are coming from sites that are contextually relevant to your own site topic.

Its in the weight loss niche, which I have been told is pretty competitive. Is that correct? If so then is being on page 309 in the time period I mentioned average, good or bad for a new site?

Being 309 really doesn't mean anything.

You could be #309 or #3009. In either case, you are equally irrelevant.

When I start working on a site, I usually do not even bother checking the ranking in the first month.

Well what I meant is does the fact that it went from not ranking anywhere in the first 1000 to ranking at 309 just a couple days after being finished mean that I optimized it properly or well?
