Backlink creation: walk me through it please

Yes, I'm a newbie - let's get that out of the way.

I've been doing a lot of reading and researching and I pretty much understand the need for keyword research, the proper niche, monetization, etc.

But it seems like it all comes down to whether or not you can get ranked highly with Google. If you can, you get traffic and make money. If you can't, well...

Which brings us to the subject of backlinks and how to create them. Is this a simple thing to do? For example, I start a website on "dinosaur bone walking sticks" and then go out and create a bunch of simple "mini blogs" with a link to the main site. Perhaps I need ten or twenty of these mini blogs, which can be created in a relatively short period of time? And the mini blogs simply say, "Came across an interesting website, check it out: dinosaurbonewalkingsticks.com"

IS THAT ALL THERE IS TO IT?

        Hi japanguy,

        There are many, many ways to get backlinks. In fact volumes of books coiuld be written on the subject. It's important to note that not all backlinks have the same value. If you focus on building backlinks from quality sites you will get quick results. One good backlink could be worth more than thousands of free-for-all links.

        The example in your post would create backlinks with almost no value. Your mini blogs must have value themselves before they can provide much help to your main site. If you build your mini-blogs into valuable sites with quality traffic, then they will be valuable links. If you simply post that one line and offer no relevant content, then those links will be almost worthless.

        The most important thing to consider when valuing a backlink is how much relevant traffic you can expect from that link. If you get lot's of quality backlinks then it doesn't mater if your page is listed in the search engines or not, you will have a constant steady stream of targeted traffic arriving from your backlinks.

        The Search Engines' algorithms are tuned to value those backlinks in much the same way and improve your rankings when they come from quality relevant pages.

        Quality = Relevant traffic
        Quality Backlinks = Links from sites with relevant traffic
        High Rankings = High relevance with Quality Backlinks

      Be careful with Yahoo answers as they NO follow. Yes it will create buzz, and send some short term traffic, but you will not get credit for a 1-way backlink. I believe that Squidoo commenting is NO follow, however links within squdoo DO Follow.
