Unusual Increase of Backlinks

Hi there..can anyone please help me out on this. I am using majestic seo to monitor the # of backlinks for a certain website. Two days ago, the # of backlinks is only 42. However, when I checked it after two days, it increases to 993.

I just found it unusual. Also, how can I check it in the majestic seo, where are this backlinks coming from? By the way, I am only using the free version.

What are your thoughts on this? I am just afraid if google considers that spammy to make that big of a jump.Prior that big jump it was on #135 and then after hitting that no.,it goes down to #141 in just 2 days.

  • As far as I know, Majestic puts links into 2 categories: Fresh (last 60 days) and Historical. So if some of your newly built links have gone over the 60 day border, they will display in the Historical category. So if you've made x backlinks in the past 60 days, after those 60, the number of BL's Majestic will show you will be x + your current backlinks.

    However, I'm not sure about this, any other opinions?
  • I'm guessing you are doing blog commenting as a back linking technique. That is why you are seeing the sudden and huge jump in backlinks. You probably commented on a site that has one of those recent comments plugins running. It just happened to get visited by a spider at the same time your comment was showing as a recent comment. It will have a link showing on every page of the site in that case. So if a site has 800 pages, you just got 800 links from that one site.

    The next time the spider visits the site, your comment will likely be bumped off, and it will revert to one link.
