I place a post at a PR6 domain and it isn't ranking anywhere for the title

Lately I bought a PR6 domain, most posts are ranking perfectly fine for the post title and I've ranked a few clients with it for insane tough keywords.

It's a real strong domain, some stats:

PA 65
DA 58
Citation Flow: 37
Trust Flow: 41

Well anyone that knows a little about stats from seomoz and majestic knows that this is a pretty crazy strong one. I bought it for $1000+ btw.

However one post, which is extremely relevant to the back links that it has, and totally in line with the purpose of the original site, isn't ranking anywhere for the title of that post. The title is a 1300 exact keyword dominated by authority sites, but heck, the domain I bought was one of the ultimate authorities on that subject. With tons of related natural anchor txt back links.

You would almost think the domain lost the strength, but that's not the case cause it ranked much tougher insurance related keywords for clients of mine so the power is still there, so why isn't it ranking for the title of that specific post.

I have to say the post is somewhat short, 200-250 words, and I didn't use the read more tag cause we have 2 links to client sites in that post and one of them is at the bottom and it's a homepage link so I couldn't shorten it. Which makes it somewhat duplicate as it's on the inner page and on the homepage. Yesterday I installed an SEO plugin to no-index category/tags/archive/author pages and I added a privacy/terms of service/contact/about us page as well. Just in case.

Any idea why it's not ranking for the post title in the top 500? I am pretty puzzled tbh as it's a pretty well written post, no crap spun without any over optimizing, maybe even a little under optimizing as the exact phrase title isn't mentioned in the content (not that it matters for the other pages/posts as those do rank at page 1), while this one, the most relevant to the original purpose of the site (before I bought it) is not ranking, real weird.

Makes me rethink if it's smart to rebuild sites in the same style as the original before it expired.

      I've thought about the length of the content indeed, the other posts are longer and do have the read more tag (around 500 words). First I wanted to see if the lack of the privacy/tos/about/contact page had any effect on this as some other poster yesterday mentioned that he ranked in 1 hour after placing those so although I thought that was for different reasons I thought heck let's see if it has any effect so I added those just in case.

      It's not really a matter of how long my link has been on it, as I own the domain, maybe you confuse "link" with "post", in that case the post has been live for about 1 month.

      Extra info: The domain has only 3 posts so far and 5 links in total to external sites (client sites) in those 3 posts. All of the 3 posts got indexed the same day. Another annoying factor is that the other 2 post titles rank at #1, however for the site name, a 3 word phrase, it's ranking at #8, while the back link profile is very natural, tons of url as anchor in different formats, with and without www, with and without http://, then the domain itself about 20% of the time and so on. You would almost start to think that it has been hit by the EMD update which would be total bullshit as it was a legit authority website with the most natural link profile ever. It has many 1000's of back links and no crap amongst that like bookmarks, profile links or any other cheap SEO kind of stuff.

        Yeah I meant how long has the link been live (in the post). So one month is a bit of time. Your post is indexed, right?

        Are you using wordpress or other software? First thing I do with my (wordpress blogs) is add a plugin called 'Robots Meta' and set it up to noindex/nofollow the about us page, tags, categories, author page, login page and etc...

        Not saying that is the problem, but it helps preserve your link juice.

    The link in the post to the client site has been live for about 1 month as well.

    Post was indexed the same day that I placed it.

    Using WP indeed, yesterday I installed the Yoast SEO plugin to noindex/nofollow the tags/etc pages. I used a paid theme that creates tons of those nonsense pages, so that shouldn;'t be a problem anymore.

    Going to drive away from WP more and more though, I really hate all this duplicate nonsense that it creates.

    I'm first gonna wait 1 week to see if this noindexing is gonna make a change, if not, I'll tell my writer to extend the post with a few 100 words and mention the title once or twice inside the content. Perhaps Google flagged it as duplicate content cause of the WP/theme habits.

    I would take a look at the content on the sites that are currently ranking for that keyword. I've had my greatest success over the past few months simply by modeling what is ranking?

    Do the top 10 results have an average of 200 words on their pages? If not, you may want to change your content length. Do the same for tags, number of images, number of OBLs, etc etc.

    Sounds to me like the post probably got filtered by an over-optimization filter.

      Well, it's not only ranking in the top 10, it's not ranking in the first 500 results actually and it was absolutely not over optimized, the key phrase was only mentioned in the title of the post, not anywhere else, so more a case of under optimization I would say

      Obvious I haven't build a single link to that page as the homepage juice should be MORE then enough to rank it anywhere in the top 500. I mean it's a PR6 homepage with 1000's of back links.

          Actually, I could show you ones with a keyword density over 7% (minus the keyword tags. I never use them.), but I'm not going to expose any of my client's sites here.

          Over optimization was a big myth accidentally started by Matt Cutts when he called an upcoming Google update an "over optimization penalty". That caused people to think that Google was going to target sites like you mentioned, but instead the update had nothing to do with onpage SEO and everything to do with backlinks. The update was Penguin.

          Anyhow, you can search around and find sites like you describe still ranking just fine.

    I am pretty sure there is an over optimization penalty for onpage factors, one of the main reasons why so many sites got hit by the EMD update.

    Let's take AdsenseFlippers as an example, they stated multiple times that they are hardly doing any back linking for their latest batches of sites, or no back linking at all. They've been hit hard by the EMD update and in fact every website is an EMD so how can you say it's a penguin penalty when a site has zero back links?

    Besides that I see plenty of 1-2 page sites still ranking fine with a typical EMD name, funny enough most of the sites that still rank well aren't monetized with affiliate links or Adsense. So I'm pretty damn sure it has way more to do with onpage factors / panda.

    Also I've seen numerous examples where I advised clients to lower the kw density and in fact de-optimize things a bit, and their rankings got back in no time.

    I also had a few sites of myself that lost all rankings due to the EMD update, these sites weren't even typical EMD's and they had close to zero back links.

    Besides that, you can't say something is a myth cause you have an example that is still ranking fine with 7% kw density (probably a webshop I suppose), penalties are not based on single factors, it's the complete picture, if there are enough other quality signals then you can get away with certain stuff, also works vice versa.

    ps: All this has nothing to do with the site that I described in the OP
