Does Google "Like" Sites with Lots of Outbound Links?

By that, I mean, does it help with SEO?

I like studying how others set up their successful authority sites. Right now I'm looking at realcartips.com. This guy's site has been around since 2002 (I think). Each article is loaded with outbound links to other authority sites. Doesn't appear to have a ton of backlinks given the age of the site. The outbound links are not rel="nofollow" although he does have them opening to a new window. The design reminds me of a squidoo lens. I know Google loves Squidoo.

Am I missing an opportunity by not linking to SEVERAL authority sites? Currently I only have a few on the entire site.

I only see 4 outbound links on that sites Index page:
    • 1-link (hxxp://www.cargurus.com/Cars/forsale)
    • 3-links (amazon)

I did a quick check with this tool, I assume it counted links correctly.

Some of those links are affiliate links that redirect from a 2nd internal page/URL (cloaked links).

      cars.com
      annualcreditreport
      findacreditunion

I see what you mean by these cloaked links. He uses a refresh command.

Do these violate Google TOS? I THOUGHT they did.

I'm not sure how Google looks at cloaked links, I don't use links like that on my sites. IMO people use links like that when they have something to hide.

Traffic could care less what a URL looks like.

Well this guy has been featured on Google Adsense Advert. I really wonder what makes him earn that much money. The site is old but has a Pagerank of 4 and doesn't get much traffic.
It could be that he has built a site on a particular niche.

Like pages with lots of outbound links? Well, not exactly. It depends on where they're pointing.

The only way OBL is good for your page is if you link to sources in the same way wikipedia does. Always link to highly relevant pages. If you link to crap, Google will treat your site like crap.

The guy gets people to his site, and they click ads.

That's exactly what google tells you to do.

A lot of stuff mixed around here.

One has got nothing to do with the other.

Who said "google" liked the site? The adsense guys
like the way he does adsense. Different animal.

He's got plenty of links to his book on amazon.

Outbound links have nothing to with anything.

Linking to an authority site is not worth shinola.
So, linking to 100 of them is 100 times nothing.

The guy does adsense well. Pat him on the back and
      move on.

Nothing on that site is violating anything. He doesn't even
      have adsense on each page.

Google does not hate, nor like, sites that have links,
      just because of those links.

If you have 1,000 pages on a site, and link to one OBL
on each page, you have 1,000 OBL.

My gosh people, look at the outbound links at the WF.
They have authority and google liking, but it's on no
account of the OBL either way. If the site's good, the
      site's good.

The WF must have a million. I know. Some are going to now
go out and put 1,000,000 OBL on their site, thinking it
      must be some voodoo seo...

Thanks. That's basically what I was asking. As you know, the "rumor" (there are a lot of rumors & myths) is that an outbound link to an authority site helps add credibility in Google's eyes.

I decided to run IntelliTamper on that site to check out their directory & file structure and it's still running! 120 MEGS of content and it's still not finished!

My website is pitiful compared with this site. I still have 10 years to catch up though
