Estimated CPC for Region in Adwords

I'm having trouble coming up with cost estimates for keywords set to display only in certain locations. Example: Let's say I want to bid on "chocolate chip cookies" but only want the ad to show in Boston, MA. How can I figure out the estimated CPC in that location? Or would it not be any different than bidding on the non geo-targeted term?

It will be different than bidding on a non geo-targeted term. It can be cheaper or more expensive depending on the competition and the quality of traffic. If no one else is geo-targeting, then you can normally expect to pay the same or less than the nationwide version of the keyword. If others are geo-targeting, you can normally expect to pay more.

Thanks for your reply. Is there a way for me to calculate this before embarking on the campaign? I know the estimated CPCs in the Keyword Tool represent the most you can expect to pay for the first slot, but is there no way to get these numbers for specific regions? I'm coming up with answers for higher-ups, and I'm more of an SEO guy.

You can setup the campaign in Google. Set your Geo-Target and enter the keywords you want to bid on. Set your bid to some absurdly low CPC that won't get you any volume. If keyword tool estimates the national keyword CPC to be $3.00, bid $1.00 or even $.50. Google will eventually pop something next to the keyword saying "You need to bid $X.XX to appear on the front page". That'll tell you what Google expects you to pay to get any volume for the Geo-Targeted Keyword.

        Hi StopWatch4500,

Estimates are just that "estimates" based on average performance across a range of advertisers. AdWords is an auction based bidding system so there is no way to know what your actual CPC will be until you actually start competing with other bidders in your geographic location. To further muddy the waters, your actual CPC will also depend a great deal on your Quality Scores.

PPC bidding auctions are very dynamic, advertisers are coming and going, using day parting, geo-targeting, split testing ads, varying daily budget limits, and constantly adjusting bids. It would be very difficult for AdWords to provide estimates based on the billions of possible geo-target defined areas for billions of different keywords. The best way to get the data you seek is to run a test.
