Failing miserably in Adwords PPC

Just my observation because I don't know your product at all, but those keyphrases look like they are targeting people who are looking for free information and not in spend mode. With PPC it's best to try and do exact match phrases that catch people when they have already researched, otherwise you can end up with a lot of clicks and no return. Like I said though, I know nothing about your product or target audience.

Makes sense. I'm promoting a debt relief/debt settlement pay per call campaign from shareasale where they call the 800 number to request a free consultation, and you get payed if they're on the phone for 3 mins or more.

Hi Saintsfan40,

First let me say that you are targeting a very competitive niche in AdWords, and that particular niche is very different from most PPC campaigns in that only the top ad position converts well. Have you tried targeting top ad position only?

That type of service may perform best in Search, and you should probably try Search Network only campaigns and use exact match only keywords. Mobile ads only work well for certain types of offers, this may not be a good fit for mobile ads.

I'd have to say you're right on the money dburk. It is very competitive. I tried top position as well as lower positions as well. It would probably be best if I look into less competitive campaigns. Just a matter of practice, testing and tweaking before I get it right. At least I know where I stand and why I'm not doing well with this campaign.

Exactly.
HOWEVER. It is still very likely that users who look for such queries (even if they don't say buy/purchase etc) would be actually looking for buying things.
That is why what I do is that I put my keywords as direct match.
So it would look something like: [debt relief]
Having this is very likely that they will buy things.
But if you have have a global match, it will always fail just miserably.
Because they might be looking for something even completely unrelated, eg: "debt ceiling 1980", or "advantages of debt relief", or even wikipedia articles.
Have a look at dimensions, and see what queries they are actually typing in.

You would instantly get much less traffic, but trust me the intent to buy would be much higher than all the long-tail shit.

182 Clicks 9,916 Impr. 1.84% CTR and Zero Conversions.

Here are examples of a few keywords I'm using

debt relief help
debt relief network
unsecured debt relief
best debt relief program
free debt consultation

So yeah, apparently I'm doing this all wrong. Just dying to get conversions on my campaign.

Any helpful advice from PPC experts would be greatly appreciated

Why dont you try-debt relief consultations, or free debt relief consultations-something along those lines

  That the reason you are paying hell loads...
  Having a score of 10 for example, it would cost times less.
  To lower the score there is actually only one drill: Relevancy.
  CTR is important, but we should have no intent to lure the users into what they wouldn't normally expect, so if we sell something, we should make it clear and distinguishable from the other intent they might have, such as informational intents. So its always good to balance it.
  Apart from CTR, it also does make a simple comparison of your keyword against the page. This is where I did quite a mistake before.
  Though, when I switched the ad from the welcome page, to the actual description of the product where it did mention my kw, it really got improved. So optimizing the landing page is always a good idea - and I do find it better to send the user to the most relevant sub-page where I got my keywords.
  This algorithm looks a bit weird all in all, and is much easier to game than the actual serp results that focus on long-term.
  Another also important, but not the major factor is the engagement, the more they stay on the page, as they are reading something, or browsing through the site the better of course.

  If you are getting clicks for that cheap in that field you are probably using display network.
  
  Turn off display network or use managed placements only. Take a look at your display networks tab, set your adwords date range to this month, scroll down to placements.
  
  Organize your placements by most clicks to least. I'd bet you're getting 90% clicks from mobile apps. They are completely worthless and honestly the only clicks that cheap on Google in that industry.

If you are going for top positions for these keywords, you will suffer a financial bloodbath immediately. My questions is whether you are getting a very low conversion by targeting mobile devices.

Good points shared here. Looks like I need to avoid a very competitive niche and stay away from display network. The money drains fast when you're not getting quality clicks.
