No, it was just introduced into blogs when blogs became a popular thing, but those in the know how before blogs were created, ppl were pinging other sites all the time.

how? the same way you put a link on a article of yours say on ezines, what are you doing? you're essentially pinging your site from ezines with a link there pointing to your site to have the search engine spider come over and review your content for indexing or updating.

Just asking, because that's what I thought.

I have bad experience with pinging, I don't know what's wrong with my blog. after I post new article and submit to social bookmark and then i pinging with pingoat.com.

You know what??? After 24 hours my blog disappear from google first page. and i can't find anywhere on google page. Except i using keyword site:domain.com

and i realize that my blog is being trap on google sandbox. Now i never use ping service.

Pinging is a tremendous way to get new content indexed quickly. Even if you just have an HTML squeeze page I personally still Ping it with Pingomatic.com and I have no problem getting indexed with in 24 hours. My blog is picked up in literally minutes whenever I make new blog posts.

Not sure why my post was deleted..but at least the moderators/admins can leave some reasons Anyways, I always ping regular pages with autopinger.com, you can give it a try. Using Pingomatic.com to ping regular pages is something that their service is not intended to do and might be considered very close to misusing their service which is only intended for blogs to alert other sites of new posts. You must really consider finding services which really let you ping URLs instead of blogs. I only know of autopinger but I am sure there are some others too

I'm a big fan of pingler as well. One question, I always ping the main URL, but can I put in a deep link to ping? That is, can I ping an individual post or should I just keep pinging the domain URL?

Basically pings are for feeds and for updating a social networking site that your blog has made some changes. It basically says hey, check me out. I strongly suggest feedping if you want to ping a site. It has pingomatic and everything else all combined.
