Hi I wanted to get on page 1 of google with a youtube video for a keyword phrase that is not very competitive...and I wanted to ask you if the audio of the video will have an effect on the rankings....I was thinking of creating a power point presentation with a lots of good info and the audio would be some background music....as I have not a good voice...and I dont have a lot of money to spend on voiceovers...has the audio an effect on the rankings?

I think people tend to prefer voice-over commentary to music and therefore you would get better feedback on the video if there was voice-over. This said, I have been impressed by some videos that have very appropriate music, it can make a video powerful, but only in some cases.

As for music or voiceover effecting keyword phrases, not sure how it can.

I believe your real question is whether audio makes an impact in improving your SEO ranks.

I don't think it does. Not today, at least, in my opinion.

In the long term, obviously I don't know whether something will change. It won't change easily I guess.

From a marketing angle, though, a voice-over *could* be better than random music, if done appropriately, and with a well-written script.

Audio will not have any impact for SEO.

However, on YouTube there is an option to add a transcript for the video - what you have in the transcript, does have impact for rankings.

Transcript would help people with hearing disabilities to know what your video is about, but you would not make any harm to anything or anyone, if you uploaded a transcription file than has some text relevant to your topic, and of course your main and LSI keywords included.

If you want to make sure this works, try uploading a video with transcript that has some totally unique word in it, and search for that word on Google.

Another thing you might want to check is if there are already Video results on Google's first page. If there are, then you can easily take their position. If there are no videos on the first page, it means that Google does not see a worthy video to rank there and yours might be the one, OR that they do not have and are not planning to have a page 1 ranking for a video, for that keyword term.

Audio does not affect your SEO rankings for videos.

Its your title, keywords, tags, and category.

You can do a voice over or none and it will not affect the rankings

I need to take a contrary opinion here. Speaking the keyword in a voice over most definitely makes a positive difference in ranking. We have tested this extensively in competitive niches and it has an impact.

Having said that, if it is a low competition term, then you probably wouldn't need to do that anyway... so at this point, I wouldn't worry about it.

Nope, it does not. IF you have a voice over and add a transcript, then - most definitely it does. But having just a voiceover does not make any difference. try to test it again - say some unique word in your voiceover, and try to do a search for that unique word - your video will not show up. Now, try to do the same thing with the unique word in the transcript, and you will have a different result. I did test that, too

Well well... I would advise all of you to go to your channel, pick one of your videos, then select the closed caption feature on your video while it is playing. What you will see are the transcribed words (at least according to Youtube) available for users of CC. Those words are your script/audio and they contain... guess what.... KEYWORDS!! ... and LSI words... just like a written article.

Hence, your argument is that Youtube/Google absolutely ignore those words? I think ... NOT!

Video marketers must keep in mind the ever-improving feature of these closed captions in Youtube videos. This means that right now, for every video you upload, you should be adding your own closed caption (SRT) file to be sure that the keywords are deciphered properly. Accurately transcribed closed captions will help your rankings.

That is exactly what I am talking about - closed caption, a transcript. It can make the whole difference in rankings.

Again - it is NOT your voiceover or music, it`s what in your transcript!

Alex I suppose my argument is that they just are not separate anymore. Youtube automatically creates a transcript for your video uploads now, based on what is spoken in the video.

The issue Youtubers need to address is that those transcripts are not perfect by any means.

For example, when I say "screenflow 4" in my videos, Youtube whacks out some strange variation of it, such as "free flow for" or "Cream low pour"... Yeah I have seen a few strange variations for a very important keyword in my marketing. So that is potentially a very significant oversight for IMers on Youtube.

And this is the key...Youtube (Google) is obviously trying to detect the words used in the audio. However, at this point in time, they don't seem to be too good at it.

It may be that correcting the transcript that Google can match that up to the audio? It could be that the words in the transcript help, but if they match the audio too, they help even more. At least this is how I would do it if I was in charge of the Youtube algo.

What we do know is that Google is definately trying to read the audio, and if they aren't using it now for ranking, they will in the future.

Well, semantics really... unless you upload a transcript YT does it themselves and gets the transcript from the words that are spoken on the video.

As I said, we've tested this extensively in heavy duty niches and launches, and it does have an impact on ranking.

YT gives you the option to fully edit that transcript. And if you edit it to make it a completely different story than it was generated by YouTube from the voice (and totally irrelevant to your video), your rankings will be affected by what's in the transcript, and NOT by what's in your voiceover. Transcript is what helps the rankings - feel free to edit it to your advantage.

NOTE: This is not an advice to make your transcript irrelevant or misleading. But - it's always good to edit it to have your text and keywords spelled correctly.

Well I tried to explain it in several different ways but people still kept on saying that the voiceover is what makes the difference. This is the scenario that makes things clear (How close it is to real life and how bad it would be to do that - that's another question.) I have never had problems with any of my channels (and I have many) having transcripts relevant and keyword rich. As long as you stay within the terms of YT, you are fine.

Marty S, I never said you should mis-represent anything, or mislead anything, I do not advocate that and I never provided that as "advice" - I give this as example so people understand that the transcript is what makes the difference, not the voiceover. And when you have 80% of your keywords spelled incorrectly in the automatically generated transcript, I don`t think you would like to leave them there like that

I would also imagine that hearing-impaired folks would be much more angry about such a video and report it quicker too. So good luck with that.

Yes everyone is correct in saying that no audio will not mess with your ranking at all. It can hurt your conversion and/or your call to action. Keep it short, very very very informative and a clean crisp call to action. Make lemon-aid out of lemons!

Audio does not affect your ranking at all, unless you have closed captions on your video which will greatly help it rank. I do a lot of PPD on the site and most of the time I use the same high beat songs for most of them.

The audio of a video doesn't have influence to the ranking at Google. Title, tags and description of a video influence search engine ranking position at Google.

If you have low budget, you don't need to fill the voice on a video. Or you practice to speak then record your own voice -> of course you need a mic on your computer. You can create a PowerPoint file then convert it into a video and upload it to Youtube. The vital point is title, tags and description, so you must write these properly.

It's a good practice when you do upload videos to YouTube to include relevant links and lots of unique content in the video description. You shouldn't worry about ranking for a particular keyword or search term phrase. Rather, speak naturally about the topic you're best knowledgeable about, and the targeted traffic will come to you naturally from search engines! :-)
