Ok to clarify...I do know what a backlink IS and what its function is. But I was curious on what a backlink is supposed to look like when you post it? Could it be just a post with your URL or a post with your URL in your signature? etc.

I am just starting to get into backlinking and I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

Thanks in advance.

Spamming the forum with stupid questions and links in his signature and not knowing what a back link is, uhu.

There's no need to be a jerk. My guess is that most of your posts are "witty" replies to someone with a valid question, whether it be silly or "stupid" to you or not. In my eyes there was validity behind asking it.

BTW, I'm sure you do quite well with your products/services, but you'd probably get a few more prospects if you replied more respectfully. Who knows, I could have been a potential buyer. Now? I'd never think twice to do business with you. *shrugs* It is what it is I guess.

I was aware of what a backlink was. But I was unaware of the proper way to make a backlink.

I've started to browse other forums but I didn't want to come off as spamming or anything along those lines so I sought out counsel from the fine people here at the warriorforum.

As for everyone else, thank you. My question was answered.

  • Ctrlaltrage,

Although your question has a simple answer, it helps everyone learn and master the basics. If you are asking what anchor text should be in your backlink, this is actually a very good question. Optimally if you get control of anchor text (which often you may not) you should try and target keywords that you are after as well as synonyms of those keywords. Keep in mind that there may not always be the opportunity to place anchor text and many times it may just be a form field in a directory that allows you to put your website in.

Along the same line of thought, people often neglect other pages on their website for backlinking. Sometimes to create a good user experience and to increase PR and visibility for other pages on a website you should think about building backlinks for inner pages of your site.

If you are just getting into link building, this is a good resource,

In forum you post it in signature,
In blog post , you post it in your name because name is your anchor text
In article post it with your keyword text hyperlink it .

There are many types and styles of links. It is more about where about the link comes from and what it says that is most important. Others have given you a good start.

Going back to the OP's question... A backlink may look like an image/banner, a piece of text (Click here) or a URL. Backlinks can also be embedded in videos or infographics. They come in all shapes and sizes. In a word, pretty much anything you can click on and be taken to another website is a backlink.
