Pop-up Ads, does it affect your site?

I was wondering if pop-up ads/banners can affect your site at all? Will it look bad that your site can lose its rankings? Thanks.

    Pop-up ads are not a BIG deal, I use them on many of my sites that still rank well. However, overdoing it can affect your ranking as the search engines tend to see your site as lower quality. If your linking to too much affiliate banners or affiliate products, that will definitely affect your ranking.

    A lot of the large online movie sites are full of pop-ups yet they rank at the top for very difficult keywords like 'watch movies online'.

    I wouldnt bother with them. If you really want to use them then check your stats in analytics before adding them and trial them for a month and review the difference. If your bounce rate increases and your page views per visitor drop then you will know people are hating your popup. Also your bounce rate etc via google can lower or increase your rankings.

    Personally I will never use popups. It makes the site look spammy and makes people think the site owner is greedy. If I enter a site that has one of those page overlay popups I hit back instantly. Most people use popup blockers anyway or they come built in the browser so whats the point?

    I would worry about losing traffic once they landed on an annoying page with pop-ups.

    For instance infolinks, anytime I land on a page with infolinks I bail ASAP, doesn't matter If the page has the best info online, those pop-ups are annoying as heck as you move your cursor around the page.
