Decline In Traffic During US Thanksgiving Day or Unconfirmed Google Algo Update?

I experienced a 20% to 30% decline in web traffic since November 20. Could it be because of the Thanksgiving day? Most of my web visitors come from the USA. Did you experience a web traffic decline also? Does this usually happen during this time of the year?

  • Yes.. A lot of websites will experience a traffic drop over the Thanksgiving holiday. I would expect to see the same at the end of December around xmas.
  • A lot of people in the US are traveling so they wont be on their computers.

    So expect this around any holiday where people travel to be with family and loved ones

  • One of my sites increased tremendously. That's because of my niche and Black Friday.

    • You might get an increase in your sites' sales on "Cyber Monday" as well if those are e-commerce sites..

    • I felt apprehensive also Angela, it's good to know that this is the direct reason for the traffic decline. I thought that there was another Google algo update or something.

    • I saw a decline with most of my sites. I think it's only natural considering people tend to be away from the computer on holidays. The variable that would change things in the case of Thanksgiving would obviously be black Friday.
  • My traffic drops on weekends. Holidays are the same. People generally browse the web if they have nothing better to do.

  • Yeah holiday season drops are quite common depending on your type of website. Most people are with family, on vacation or out the house. However Google did supposedly do a small update just before Thanksgiving so please double check your rankings to see if those keywords that dropped traffic have dropped in the rankings.

  • I've done a little search. It seems that, aside from the Thanksgiving holiday, the decline in web traffic was due to a Google algo update at about a day or two before Thanksgiving. It's not yet confirmed but it is probable.

    Was Google trying to hide this algo update by implementing it before Thanksgiving when web traffic naturally declines on this day?
