Any way of analyzing a website to find out what helps them stay at number 1 on google for a particular keyword?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There are tons. The main ones I would look at would of off-page optimization tools, however:

    - OpenSite Explorer
    - SEO Majestic

For on-site analysis there are almost limitless options. I personally like this free SEO tool Screaming Frog SEO Spider Tool & Crawler Software | Screaming Frog for quickly pulling the title tags, meta descriptions, and headers of a website.

Another is their Website Auditor. The free version is limited, but you'll still get tons of good info.

You will also want to look at their internal linking structure as this is very important. Most backlink checking tools only show you external links to a site.

In addition look at their page structure, page titles, headers, alt tags etc.

Is there a software for the bolded part to explore internal linking structure and anchors?

I believe the other points are covered by tools like Screaming frog and Spyglass.

Check their backlink profile. You can use majestic seo, seo spyglass or open site explorer for this.

Beside getting an overview about their backlinks, you can check for their keyword list by looking at meta keywords.
See how often they add fresh content on the website.
      Looks at their social profile.
Try to take links from those website from which your competitors are linked.

I would say, there are a lot many ways to check that out for a particular keyword. One of them in doing Competitor Follow-up by first analyzing who is your competitor for the particular keyword and then start following him by various online available tools.

I would recommend, Open Site Explorer is also good one to do that. From there, we can check out when another website master has posted links and we try to do submission on those sites.

Like Opensiteexplorer, SEO SpyGlass is also the one which is widely used. SEM Rush is also a great tool which helps you in doing this. It's the paid one, but shows desired results...
