Hi,

I know there is a lot of talk going around EMD and I need a little more info on this.

Let's say, if I am planning to build a site on recyling, then would it be prudent to purchase a domain name like recylinginfo or recyclinghelp.com. Will they be considered as EMD?

Would it be be good to start building site with such domain name, if I am planning to rank in SERP on the basis of content and not on the basis of domain name itself.

Thanks

  • yes you can do this work
  • if your h1 and primary keywords are recyclinginfo or recycling help then it may be under emd.
  • One thing need to be very clear, EMD is never impacted , that is the reason why when you search for pepsi , pepsi.com comes first and there are thousands of example I can provide.

So don't worry about getting a good domain related to your product and service if it is available.

    • Yup.You just cleared my doubts.

      Thanks.
  • EMD Does not mean that your highly optimized domain goes down ... It is about to squeez exact match irrelevent results. don't worry and go ahead.
  • Don't target your website's url as a keyword to avoiding emd update.
  • As long as you have good/quality content EMD will be fine. I think the EMD update from Google was more for crappy and light weight sites that tried to use EMD for better results on those keywords.

    • Exactly. I believe EMD update was suppose to target those spammy sites that had crappy content and were targeting in SERP just on the basis of couple of main keywords in the domain.
  • I don't think it's a EMD you have to worry about, it's the SE robot checking to see that your entire site is artificially constructed around one keyword. If The site content and keyword structure looks natural to Google, they probably won't penalize you.
  • EMD Is exact match domain and it is an update by Google which penalize the domains which uses exact domain for their website and keywords. The main penalty would be for those websites which uses keywords for their domain name.
  • EMD update basically affected those websites which doesn't have good quality link and fresh content ,but they are ranking just because of keyword present in their URL's . To put it better they're not the best suited websites for that keyword.

You can buy an exact match, just make sure to follow Google guidelines.
  • The EMD update is COMPLETELY MISLEADING. IT's not about "exact match domains," it's about "exact match anchors." The sites that were affected, linked too much with the same anchor text.

If you created a general site called "coolify(dot)com" but then blasted it with 10,000 backlinks that all said "blue widgets," your site would be penalized by the EMD update for an unnatural backlink portfolio.

Penguin and EMD are both about BACKLINKS. Not about the domain you choose to register...
