sub-domains vs sub-directories

Excuse me if I'm mistaken, but it's my understanding that searchengines view sub-domains as another website. So if I'm building several related websites wouldn't it be better to have them as sub-directories so it's viewed as a larger themed site.

Thanks

Alan

It used to, not sure about now, I've not tested it since Matt Cutts mentioned something about it on his blog some months ago, cos one used to be able to get serious search engine real estate by creating sub domains with related keywords, sub category keywords if you will, and completely knock people off the first page, from what I gather they're going to just add a link under your serp rankings with "more results from www.domain.com" instead.

But if you want to do subdomains, sure, go for it, the prominence is still a lot higher in subdomains than using category folders.

Thanks for the reply. What I meant to say was would the searchengines look at it as more of an "authority" site if sub-folders were used instead of sub-domains. If each sub-domain were viewed seperately it would mean less pages. But I think I get the idea.

      Thanks

I am making great in my subdomain.. it is ranked higher than my main domain on its niche... subdomain is better than subfolders if you are dealing with different niches... I am planning to add another blog with another subdomain too..
