If a post gets ranked in Google and you edit the post (say change the anchor text URL) does it affect ranking of that post?

    • It depends on WHY that post is being ranked. If you are being ranked for the keyword: "yellow spotted zebra" and you change your post to not include that word in the content at all, then yes, you will be deranked.

  • google calculates MOST of it's scoring of your page from what ANOTHER page says about your url.

So if your page is about dogs and a cat website links to you under the word: "cat" anchor... then google thinks you're a good candidate for SERP for cat.

if you change "cat" to mouse... then yes... you will no longer appear in the SERP for "cat"
  • Yes if you are getting rank on a keyword. If it's rank on long phrase like title then it also rank in search engine after changing anchor text link.

    • So from your reply I understand that If the only thing I change is where an anchor text links to then it should not affect ranking. But if I change/remove keywords then ranking could be affected.

      Thanks
  • let me understand this a bit.
you have your anchor text in your url page (www.url.com/anchor-text) and want to know if change it (to www.url.com/different_anchor_text) will lose any serp rankings it currently has for any random keywords...?

If that is the question, then the answer is yes. You will lose any value Google has given that page. It is the same as if you were to have created a whole new page.

Will it gain the rankings from before might be the next question. The answer is yes and now.
No: If you had backlinks going to the previous page URL - it is that URL that is getting the authority not the new one (unless you go in and modify all the back links to point to the new URL). A 301 redirect can also help.
Yes: If it ranked on its own organically with no backlinking to it - you have a good shot at Google ranking it on its own again...

Was that your question? or did I missunderstand?
  • So long as the keywords and title are not tempered with, you should retain your ranking..
