SEO For A Site With Almost 4000 pages

I have a client that is concerned with the organization of the pages on his site. He feels that it is a bit disorganized and if we reorganize the folders and pages the entire site will rank better in the search engines.

The site is already ranking top 5 of Google for most of his money keywords.

He feels that reorganizing to show a clean hierarchy would improve his results.

Does anyone have a clue on whether this would make sense to reorganize the folders?

Thanks!

are you talking about categorizing the services or products in proper menu in website?

I wish it were that easy. They have a comprehensive site on skiing in a particular location which includes lodging reservations, purchasing lift tickets, summer activities, winter activities, hosting a wedding, weather, etc.

They have a blog attached to the site in which they feel some posts are categorized improperly. They also feel some pages should be moved into more proper areas of the menu.

They feel it should be easier to navigate and find what you are looking for.

I'm not sure if that would improve their overall performance in the search engines by moving things around.

You defiantly need to be careful with the existing ranked money pages. Rearranging internal links can make or break a site.

My advice is to take a semi-ranked lower converting keyword/page & work out a strategy with that keyword/page, then repeat with additional keywords/pages one by one while keeping an eye on the SERPs.

Do not do a complete site overhaul all at the same time If you already have money keywords/pages performing half way decent.

If you had no keywords/pages already ranked, it wouldn't be a big deal to overhaul the entire sites link structure.

I'm not sure if I feel comfortable moving things around on this site. Like I said, they are ranking very well for lots of their money keywords although the client feels the site should be easier to navigate...not only for humans but for the search engine spiders as well.

The client specifically wants me to move pages around and update the 301 redirect in the .htaccess file.

Is that a daunting task and will this make a difference in the serps?

Be careful , it more complicated can building an authority website or ecom site. There are enough challenges to overcome when you really start doing this. First you need to analysis the existing keyword ranking and see which are the pages which really ranks well currently and need to have plans to keep it un-touched (if possible). Some times you can't do it as this project demand a major overhaul , then you need to convince your client that it would result better after a dip (you should work towards it). Billing is another factor. You normally tend to bill lesser and then realize that you had underpaid for this entire project when comparing to the efforts and time you had put.

As per user point of view it would be best if you divide product or service as per category, in this way user easily navigate the site, and by this you target more keyword also. Its ethical way, so you don't need to worry about loss the result, you just need to redirect the old pages to new appropriate one.
