Updating static html website to wordpress

Does anybody know is there any risk for seo to update an old static html website to wordpress. URLs will stay the same. I mean is there a risk to lose rankings somehow?

  • I think it doesn't affect your website. Use 301 redirection when you'll do this.

    • Do not use a 301. That would be foolish. The site will be created using the exact same URL structure.

      Whenever you make site changes, there is always the possibility of losing rankings. Even if the content is similar or virtually identical. The layout could change. For example, a left sidebar in Wordpress shows up at the top of the code versus in an HTML site you could make the sidebar on the left, but have it show up after the main body in the code. The placement of the content like that could impact your rankings.

      Overall, changing from HTML to Wordpress shouldn't impact your rankings much. I just hope you are not changing it because someone fed you that silly line that Wordpress is much better for SEO.

  • No - if you've mapped the URLs correctly then its good. Yes - the 301 is used in a situation where your new URL is different than the older one.
  • Your WordPress Permalinks will be in a different format from the page URLs on your current site so you will need to set up the 301 redirects.

    With regard to the left sidebar content appearing before the main content in the HTML, this depends entirely on the theme you choose. The quality premium themes (Genesis, Thesis, iThemes, etc) will all present the main content ahead of the sidebar content. So just be careful selecting your theme.

      That's not true. I converted my old static html website to wordpress site today and everything went fine. The site looks good. URLs are exactly same like earlier.

      I think many people on this forum don't really don't know what they are talking about.

  • The way i see it, if you can successfully make the transition while avoiding 404 errors,
    then the future is better in terms of expansion and flexibility that the wordpress platform provides.
