Questions about Wordpress:silo structure+Category page and duplicate content

I'm new to wordpress so I need some help understanding a few things.

What exactly should be located in the silo/parent page? links to the supporting child pages or actual content.

Ex. comicbook.com

Dc comics (parent page/silo landing page)
Batman comics
Superman comics
Wonder comics

Now what should be on the dc comics page? I know everything about batman should be on the batman comics but I get confused as to what should be on the main silo page. Also I wanted each child category to lead to grandchild categories Ex:

When you hover the cursor over batman comics more drop down menus appear beside it like so:

Batman Comics-batmobile-batman villains-batgirl-robin

Say I wanted 10 posts in each grandchild category where should they all link back to? I'm guessing to the Batman Comic child category right.

Second question is how do I rank category pages? I've read something about them having duplicate content because they have same info as post pages.

Sorry if these seem like newbie questions but I'm use to blogger. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and my last question revolves around building links using a silo structure. Since everything is linked together inside of say, the Batman comics silo landing page would it be a good idea to backlink the that page and let the link juice flow through out the grandchild category pages/supporting posts.

Oh one last thing exactly how do you link the silo landing age to home page, is it by a contextual link, through navigation or is it automatic because it's located on the index page.

  • Are you wanting a static homepage or a homepage to display all your latest posts (my preferred method).

    • I never used a static homepage before, so most likely one with latest posts.

    • One question. I use breadcrumbs with the "landing page" (next level up) linked. The landing pages are keywords I'd like to rank for. Is this sufficient, or should you have an anchor text link within the body?

The easiest way I can explain this is, think of each silo as a mini site, the site as a whole is focused on the same main keyword, in your case DC comics. The Index page (ex: domain.com) would be focused on DC comics.
    • DC comics (domain.com)
      • Batman comics (Silo landing page)
        • Gotham Knights (Supporting page)
        • Shadow of the Bat (Supporting page)
        • Streets of Gotham (Supporting page)
        • Batman and Robin (Supporting page)
        • etc...

The silo landing page can include a brief description of the supporting pages content. How you add static content to your silo landing page depends on your Wordpress theme.

Build external links pointing at your silo landing page, maybe a few at any supporting pages that start generating their own traffic, depends on SERP competition.

Try & keep internal links pointing at pages in the same silo (like a mini site of it's own).

My advice is don't nest the URLs too deep, keep it simple for traffic to navigate the site. Industry standard is your traffic should be able to reach any page on your site in 3 clicks or less, not written in stone, just a good idea to keep the site structure simple for traffic.

Linking from the silo page to the Index page, try & keep the important links towards the top of the page/s. If you can keep the links in content, fine, If not, use a breadcrumb link at the very least.

Most of these things are theme related, how you go about adding/removing internal links. It helps to know HTML & at least the basics for PHP.
