SERPS Fluctuation: Is This Normal?

I swore off link building, but like an addict I sometimes go back.

I have a low competition keyword originally targeted. I've found that I have a much better keyword in my sights (was in position #175). They pay very well IF I can ever get it to the first page.

The site is 6 months old with links I built SLOWLY and a lot that actually came naturally.

I got greedy and want that keyword so I'm working a certain plan. I've just started out with 10 web 2.0s targeting this keyword. I've only built 4 so far over a week (doing it SLOW).

Every time I create one, the keyword disappears completely from the serps the next day. But the next day it comes back a LITTLE better. Currently it sits at #140.

Is the plan working or am I risking driving it from the serps completely and forever. The short disappearance scares me, but so far it comes back a little better.

    Hi,

    This is completely normal. A 6 months old website is still considered fairly new so Google is still trying to find out where exactly you belong in the SERPS. I would recommend keep building quality and relevant links since in the long run these will benefit you alot more. To answer you questions this is completely normal especially if you have a brand new website and are still needing to prove your websites worth.

    SERP fluctuation is very normal (especially with new website), Moreover I don't think any good web2.0 site will harm your pages by any mean (unless you are not spamming )

    The google dance at work...like digitalguru said, the site is still fairly new, and the proper position for it in the SERPs is still being determined. Seems like you are on the right track, though, keep us posted

      Thanks. I have driven my keyword beyond 1,000 many time from being greedy and pushing the backlinks too soon (at least that's what I believe). I know there are a lot of theories and rumors about link building (enough that I've gotten overly cautious), but one that I believe is that a domain needs to age 6 - 9 months to avoid red flags with Google. A lot of backlinks too early isn't natural. Hopefully, working slowly for even a year will keep me out of penalties. I'm trying to do it right this time.

      Edit:
      Moved up to position #133! (all the way up to page 13).

    Completely normal and nothing to worry about (as long as it keeps coming back better and not disappearing for a week or more, of course}

    completely normal. Keep at it, you'll even see your site disappear and then magically reappear at a way better spot after a few days.

    Stop tracking your rankings. Start tracking metrics that actually matter, like visitors (unique and return).

      Good point. People tend to get obsessed with checking their rankings instead of doing SEO (and improving), I know, I was one of those in the beginning.
