Let's say I get 5 backlinks from a high Page Rank site. Would this count as 1 backlink or 5 backlinks? Thanks.

  • If each of the pages are indexed I believe it would be 5 backlinks, however 5 backlinks from different sources I'm sure would be weighted higher.

Lastly, Just because the main index page of a given website is a PR5 or whatever, doesn't mean that each internal page is also going to be a PR5 :-)
  • they should count as 5 backlinks if you got them from different urls. for instance, On domain can have different urls in that say you post here at the forum and each of your post on different threads will be counted as one backlink. I saw with my indexed backlinks from Google, sometimes i have 5 or 8 backlinks but when I check them i notice they are coming form the same forum.

    Thanks
    Oling
  • If the same IP address which it would be on one site then basically one link for Google although Yahoo and MSN would probably count them all.

    • I think I just saw a video of a google algo-geek stating the opposite.

  • yeah.. That is considered as one backlink because those 5 links pointing to your site are indicated only at same page. But backlinks coming from DIFFERENT pages are considered +++ backlinks

    • That's great! so that means I can submit my articles to the same site and get many backlinks!

  • Since Google bases PR on links from a page to a page, it doesn't directly matter what site or IP the link is on. Each page adds a little authority and an incoming link vote.

BUT, site diversity is a bit of an issue. If your link diversity is small - a lot of links from the same site - you don't get as good of votes as a wider link profile. Also, if all of the linking sites are on the same C class IP or the same actual IP itself, Google considers that you may be controlling a lot of those backlinks, rather than them being natural. They may then discount the value somewhat.

This negative view of the backlinks may or may not kick in on your backlinks. It's all up to Google and how they happen to be processing at that time with their algo.

Generally, a wider link profile is better in order to protect the quality of your links, but a few extra here and there coming from the same place aren't what Google's after to "punish" you. They're using the data to catch people with link spamming. It's just that a bunch of backlinks that look like they are coming from many different sources will lead Google to better believe they are natural.
  • Thanks for the info James. I will have to start writing more articles and included my backlinks in them.

    • I noticed on the Google webmaster tools that it tracks which domains your backlinks come from. So I'm thinking that maybe Google is more interested in having links from varied domains rather than links from a single domain...
  • Backlinks are not counted per site. It is counted per page.
  • From getting quality backlinks from different domains are always beneficial but i would say yes in your case as even i my self seen for my many sites getting more than one backlink from a single site. Even from a article sites you can get different back-link for different article
