Try This With Article Marketing If You're Struggling

Get good at finding underserved keywords. Learn how to dig around in your niche with a free tool (Wordtracker, Google AdWords External Tool, etc.), then learn how to figure out the level of competition at Google for the keywords you choose. If you want to speed this process up, buy a good tool like Micro Niche Finder (there are others, but I use this one) so you can find solid keywords quickly.

You're looking for phrases that get a decent number of searches every month + don't have much competition on Google. The higher the searches and the lower the level of competition, the better. If you're persistent, you'll uncover some real golden nuggets every once in a while.

Which is what led me to post this thread. I found one the other day. It's a 3-word phrase in a niche I want to dominate. It gets 1,600 searches/month, and it has an unbelievably low level of competition. GOLD! It's so underserved that there are NO articles on EzineArticles that use this phrase. Not one. And the top 10 sites on Google only deal peripherally with this phrase. And they're all deep links (not homepages).

OK, so once I discovered this tasty little morsel, here's what I did...

First, because the domain and site I've built in this niche are so new (less than 3 months old), I decided to write and submit an article to EzineArticles using this golden phrase. In case you're wondering why, it's really pretty simple. Googlebot hits EZA several times a day... probably several times an hour. So, my article will get picked up by Google much much faster than if I simply put it on my site. And then there's the fact that Google loves EZA so much. Probably because they have pretty strict approval rules and real human eyes look over all submissions.

Now, if my domain and site were older and more established, I would probably post my article there first. It really just comes down to getting it noticed and "loved" by Google the fastest.

This article will probably rank #1 for the phrase in question without me doing anything else, but to be safe, I have pointed a handful of good links to it. It just got approved at EZA, so it's too soon for the results to come in, but I already know what will happen. Within a few days, my article will be #1 at Google (and probably Y and MSN too) whenever someone searches that phrase.

Of course, at the end of this article, I've got a couple nice keyword rich links pointing to my main site in this niche, along with a strong call to action to get readers to click on over.

And that's your blueprint, folks. Especially those of you who didn't know about this strategy or who have never tried article marketing with any real strategy in mind. Look, you can write articles until your fingers turn blue and your mind freezes up. More power to ya! But if you're going at it willy-nilly, without doing some research first and using phrases that matter, you're spinning your wheels.

It's not rocket science. Get a keyword research tool. I highly recommend Micro Niche Finder (and no, I don't know the maker or have any affiliation with the product... I just use it and love it). It's about $100, so if you can't afford that right now, then use the Google External Keyword Tool (free) and then search Google for the exact phrase competition count (put quotation marks around the phrase before you search). It takes longer and you'll get a lot of hit-and-miss, but it costs you nothing out of pocket.

Once you find a phrase that has a good number of monthly searches AND has relatively low competing pages for the exact phrase, do what I outlined above. I have a bunch of EZA articles that rank in the Top 5 for the phrases I wrote them around. Each one is a little traffic vacuum, sucking in visitors to my sites. If you really want to jack up the ranking, get a few good links pointing to your articles and be sure to use the phrase you're targeting as the anchor text in those links.

Rinse, repeat. Never stop. DOMINATE! Class dismissed.

Fantastic post...........Ias you mentioned, you know exactly what will happen with your article. It will rank number 1 in Google for the search phrase you used.

I'll add one little tidbit to sweeten this thread. Once you have your article ranking in Google's top 10 use the same title and submit a new article to articlesbase, associated content and make a squidoo lens on the subject.

The results.......well, lets just say your article will now occupy 4 spots in Google's top 10 for the keyword phrase...

And because I know some are asking themselves do you need to rewrite the article - personally, I prefer to do so but it is not necessary. The same article can occupy multiple positions in Google's top 10 provided they are on different sites (EZA, articlesbase, associate content, squidoo....etc).

    Respectfully,
    Tim

That's AWESOME info, Tim! I have noticed some of my articles (exact same article, no rewriting) showing up in the SERPs one on top of another when I submitted them to other directories. I think this keyword I wrote about is one of those. It has a ridiculously low number of competitors for a phrase that gets so many monthly searches. I wish I could find one like this every week... I'd be making BANK by the end of Summer. LOL

Thanks again for the great idea!

I think google relaxes its dupe criteria when it's got nothing to show. So for that particular longtail, it will show something that is 95% the same (there are always some stuff on the page different).

For another search that is not as long tail and goog has content to show, it would dynamically tighten its dupe filter.

True, which is where the rewriting of the article can help in getting the other directories ranked on the first page...also if you sprinkle a little bit of magic backlink dust on those articles they will rank.

The video idea is a great addition to this discussion. Thanks, Shannon! Yours too, about RSS and pings, Mari Ann. I just wanted to reiterate that the main message here is to do quality keyword research before you spend your valuable time writing articles for article marketing. Yes, it's a lot easier to just sit down and write away about a topic that's near-and-dear, and you can crank out lots of articles in a flurry. But, and it's a BIG BUT, you'll almost always be flailing away for little or no return on your energy. Just do the basic research for your niche first, build a list of keywords you have a realistic shot at ranking for, and then tailor your articles to each of those keywords.

It's basically a 1-2-3 blueprint. 1) keyword research; 2) write an article using the keyword in the title and a few times in the article body; 3) get a few links pointing to that article using the keyword as the link anchor text. Simple formula that works extremely well... if you do all 3 steps.

And for you newer IM'ers, this formula does not take long per article, once you've done it a few times and you have a system in place. Yes, the first few times take awhile because you're learning to do keyword research (or use the tool you've bought). And it can take a few times before you figure out which link sources to use for each article. Once you get the pieces in place, though, you'll soon be flying through the entire process. And the difference in terms of results will knock your socks off.

      Great thought Zeus.

I have wondered often about the profitability of the low competition keywords, but it seems all the gurus always say that if there are no ads on a search page to leave it alone.

I can understand that to a point, especially if doing ppc, but it seems that if there are searches, there are people searching. No brainer!
A little extra effort with NO outlay could prove to be very profitable.

I think too often I myself am leaving too much on the table when I overlook the smaller profit activities that are there for the taking.

Everyone wants the million dollar keyword, ads, etc., but capitalizing on volume and not just profit in an economy like we are in can be more beneficial in the long run.

So, your point is a good one.

I personally haven't used many or the low competition keywords myself, (guess I should follow my own advice, right? )but they should be good traffic nonetheless.

      Just my observation.

      Good Post!

      Thanks,

      Robert

Fantastic post!. Here is another good little tidbit I will add to this thread as well.

Once you write this article all you need to do is then put it into video form.

Then use that same keyword phrase in the title of the video and you'll have a very good shot at that ranking for that keyword as well.

Now, you have completely dominated the first page of Google! Does not get any better than that

Fantastic information. This is what makes coming to the Warrior Forum so great.

What Zeus shared is very true. It is hard work to write a good article, and this hard work will not be fully rewarded if we do not do our keyword research properly first. Wordtracker is a very nice free keyword search tool with the number of daily search reflected beside the keywords, i prefer this much more than the granddaddy of all keyword search tool - google keyword tool which reflects a monthly average.

    Hi Zeus!

This is a REALLY helpful thread. I'm a beginner - I've built my own website and now I'm learning how to drive traffic to it.

Regarding your 1) 2) 3) blueprint, I understand 1) & 2) but would you mind terribly explaining the third point in a little more detail ? Where do the links come from & what is link anchor text?

Sorry for these questions, which probably seem very basic to you - I'm learning more every day!

Oh, absolutely it'll be low maintenance for the foreseeable future. I'm glad you asked that, because this is a big part of the strategy. You're specifically looking for just those keywords that have very low competition but a decent number of searches being conducted for it. I have a few such keywords that I followed this exact blueprint for that still rank at or near the top months later. It's just about "set and forget" if you find the really good keywords.

Regarding your 1) 2) 3) blueprint, I understand 1) & 2) but would you mind terribly explaining the third point in a little more detail ? Where do the links come from & what is link anchor text?
No problem. Link anchor text is simply the words you make clickable in a link.

Here's an example of a link that does NOT use a keyword as anchor text: http://warriorforum.com

Here's that same link using the keyword 'Warrior Forum' as anchor text: Warrior Forum

This matters because the more links you have going to your site that use the keyword for anchor text, the better your rankings will be in Google and the other search engines. If all your links were simply using the URL as anchor text, you'd rank high for that URL, but who would ever search for your site using the URL? If they knew your URL, they'd just type it in and visit you straight away, right? They wouldn't use a search engine. But they would use a search engine to search for a phrase like "dog training." So if your site's about dog training, the more links pointing to your site with 'dog training' as the anchor text, the higher you'll rank. That's an oversimplification, but generally true.

As far as where the links come from, some will be natural... that is, people who like your site will link to it from their site or blog, or they might bookmark it using Digg or Stumbleupon, etc. The links YOU go out and get yourself come from wherever you find places to get a link. I would recommend commenting on blogs and leaving your link, forums like this one, where you can have a signature with a link to your site. Then there are social bookmarking sites like I just mentioned, along with directories. Many sources. Linking is a BIG part of having a successful site. I recommend learning all you can about how to get good links. It's not difficult, but if you're new it can be a bit daunting.

I link up my ezine articles to my main sites, then submit some unique articles to a handful of other decent aticle directories with half linking to my site and the other half linking to my ezine article. This points the authorative finger at your site, providing you have extensive content on your site for that niche. Note, all articles are unique and not the same.

        Elaine,

Yes, NOW you're using anchor text the best way! Good job! OK, I did a little checking on your chosen keyword phrase (Build Your Own Website). The good news is it gets a decent number of searches every month. It's a good keyword to target for that. The not-quite-bad-news-but-not-really-good-news-either is that you've got a moderate amount of competition for that phrase. You can get to the Top 10 at Google for that keyword, but it'll take some work. You'll want to spend a good amount of time getting links pointing to your site with that phrase. I would not use that phrase exclusively, by the way. Vary it up every now and then. Maybe 10% of the time make it "Build your own web site" (web site as two words). And you might sprinkle a few "Build my own website" links in there, too. That looks more natural to Google. If you have hundreds or thousands of links that all say the exact same thing, it might flag Google that the links are artificial. Hope that makes sense. Good luck!
