Need some advice on a domain I just purchased

Hi all,
I need some advice. I just purchased a domain that is in the IM niche and it gets a lot of traffic. It was a spur of the moment and I couldn't pass up the deal.

I got a dilemma. I have a IM site, the domain name doesn't go with the niche, the traffic is a bit low and was hit by the EMD back in August. I however drive traffic there.
So I am faced with
  1. Build a new site. Keep my other site separate.
  2. 301 the traffic to my current site.
  3. Build new site and 301 from old site.
Any input would be most helpful. It is a big decision.

A 301 wouldnt really benefit you to much because both websites dont relate to one another..what I got from your post. Bottom line, redirecting a bunch of backlinks that have a keyword not related to your new website wont be that beneficial.

Yeah I was kind of leaning that way a bit.
        Start a new site.

So both sites are in the IM niche?

If your new purchased site gets more traffic and has better rankings than your old one, I would 301 the old site to the new, and start driving traffic to the new and create all your new content there.
