Can't Get my Website to Rank. Please Help

Hi Warrior Forum!

This is my first post here, and I joined because I felt that you guys could help me out the most.

I have an ecommerce website that's fairly new (about 5 months old), and I have done 5 months of linkbuilding to the site. There are no site errors on Google, only minor errors on SEOMoz, and on-site SEO is done correctly.

Now with other sites I have worked with, we are able to get them to at least top 50 rankings within a few months, but with this site we can't even get them to the top 100 pages of Google. It's not ranking at all.

Can someone please help me out to diagnose this problem? Please PM me if you need more information about the site.

Well first we need to know what keywords you are going for..how competitive, etc. It may take more than 5 months to see any improvement if you are going for extremely competitive keywords.

This is the thing though, they are nowhere ranking on Google, but on Bing we are ranking for 2 of the keywords (fleece blankets pos 17 and blankets pos 64). We are trying to figure out why we can rank on Bing, but can't be found anywhere on Google.

          Keywords we are going after:
          - fleece blankets
          - baby blankets
          - throw blankets
          - bedding blankets
          - warm soft blankets

Im guessing because you have in you url blankets right? Bing weighs EMD much more heavily then google does so your site is probably http:www.xxxblankets.com/fleeceblankets etc right?

You are correct, but why is it that I have done 5 months of linkbuilding and can't find us at all on Google? I mean, after 5 months one should expect to see their site to be found on Google, even if on page 50 or whatever? I mean, sites that don't do SEO at all are on page 50 and beyond.

With a keyword list like that you need to put a lot of focus on the root keyword blankets. Build quality external links pointing at the blankets page, then branch off to the real keywords (AKA: silo):
            • blankets
              • fleece blankets
              • baby blankets
              • throw blankets
              • bedding blankets
              • warm soft blankets

Show Google your serious about the keyword blankets, then use the blankets page to help rank the real keywords/pages.

Keywords are listed in my reply above.

The links are pointing to the interior pages of the site (to each specific product). We do about 100 back links per month.

having only interior links isn't natural you need some trust flowing to the homepage and have it trickle down from there. Take a look at amazon for example. it ranks for all sorts of weird things with zero links for the interior page that's ranking. You need to build up your root.

We have about 150 out of 600 links pointing to the root and our site is a PR 4 right now, do you think we should be doing more links to the root then?

  • If you cannot get ranked for fleece blankets, baby blankets etc then try longer tail keyword combinations. Folks that use three or four word keywords are looking for a specific thing and have a specific need in mind that need addressing so there are more likelier to buy than those who search just for 1 or 2 word keywords.

I have discovered that once I start ranking on four words long tail keywords I also start ranking on my other keywords if enough people start clicking on my results in SERPs.

Your site will work perfectly in a silo structure with all the separate silos (fleece baby etc) and all the related articles will be connected together.

I believe there are a lot of factors that Google considers to rank websites, not sure how they do it though. It could be the high competition of your niche that makes it hard to rank on Google.

Another factor I believe is that your site was affected by EMD (Google update last September 28) even if it is a new site. No matter how good you are in building back links if you don't use a variety of keywords pointing to your specific landing pages then your effort is totally a waste of time.

ichl13 has mentioned a very important matter here. I think the secret is in your
site itself. most of us just say "you have to build more backlinks". I think this will
    not be enough.

How have you structured your site? How have the other sites in your niche
structured their site, especially those in the top positions. If you see something
there which you haven't applied, simply copy their structure and see what
    happens.

You have to understand how to apply internal linking in order for a silo structure to work correctly. Yukon's example is right on with the link structure and if the site is siloed correctly, then it doesn't take much backlinking to have a solid ranking.

Random interlinking your articles won't work efficiently, you have to develop a hierarchy in order for the link juice to run through the silo.

If you search the forum for "siloing" or "silo structure" you'll have plenty of info where this has been discussed in depth.

    Hi,
Try to do social sharing on Google+, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Reddit, etc. this will help your site reach people. Also you can introduce offer to attract people. You can also do image submission on Pinterest, Clipboard, etc.

    I feel your pain.

My sites that rank the best, currently utilize no off page SEO. But they survive every update despite being big EMD's and having less than 1000 words of content.

It's when you play the backlinking game that things go wrong..Even using 100% white hat techniques.

My advice is to do what Im about to do on one of my sites:

Start a PPC ad campaign to get natural traffic.
Start a youtube, podcast campaign to get more natural traffic.
Start guest posting to get some direct traffic/quality backlinks.

This should lead to more natural backlinks eventually and correct whatever bad ratios google is looking at right now.

I also like the idea of focusing on 3-4 word long-tail keywords and showing google that people want to click on your site when they google keyword.

Also keep your bounce rate respectable. Meaning 50% or better.

Thanks for all the input so far. I'll be looking into the EMD thing, though my boss doesn't believe this is the issue. I also discovered that we haven't been doing too many backlinks for some of the keywords, so I'll be definitely trying to focus my backlinking to those keywords.

Even though you need to linkbuild on your main keyword and synonyms while silo the site structure, just make sure you do it gradually over the next few weeks and months and mix things around.

Sounds like you have done a great job building backlinks. Do you have an official facebook page, an official twitter, and an official blog.

You should create a blogger, wordpress, blog, tumblr, squidoo and etc to help build your brand. And have those sites funnel traffic to money site. You should also work on lower competition keywords and work your way up the other keywords. I think you would do well using a blog network under your current circumstances... target lower competition keywords.

When I search "fleece blankets", look who pops up. Jcpenny, amazon, Target, Overstock, Walmart, Bed bath and beyond, ikea. That's some tough competition, my friend.
