Do you really need SEO software?

Hi everyone!
Long time lurker...

I've been managing several income-producing websites for many years and doing pretty well. It's a side thing, but I really enjoy it and would like to increase my websites and earnings in the new year.

For years I've looked at various SEO software. I've been skeptical. But yesterday, SEO PowerSuite was having a big sale and I broke down and bought it. Now, after using it for a short time, I'm starting to doubt my purchase.

I would like to know from people here who are actually making an income, do you use SEO software? If so, which? What does it help you do that you couldn't without the software?

And for those of you who don't use software, could you outline what you do to track your sites and how they're doing?

Thank you!

Basically, I just use rankcheckerace to check my ranking. That's all I did.

What exactly did you think you were getting out of the PowerSuite? If you thought it was some magical push a few buttons and rank type of thing, then I could see the disappointment.

The two modules I use the most are Rank Tracker and SpyGlass. Rank Tracker is great when you are checking hundreds or even thousands of keywords across multiple search engines. If you are targeting 5 keywords for your own site, it is probably a bit overkill.

SpyGlass is awesome for analyzing the backlinks of a competitor. It is even more powerful though if you combine it with another link database or two like Ahrefs, Majestic, or OSE. Download all of their links and then import them into SpyGlass and get a more complete picture.

Everyone who's saying that you need to do manual SEO are either naive or trying to mislead you.

Sometimes I'm feeling like most of the people giving away advice here on WF have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

      I agree with that too.
Have you heard somewhere that Google has more than 1 million well-teached and ultra intelligent employees, who are responsible for the searches, and each search you type in is being prepared from these employees? I have absolutely no idea what I just wrote, but however - no, you didn't hear this for sure.

Think of a strategy, implement it in software and then use it - still manual.

As Mike said above - he is using SpyGlass to track competitor's backlinks, what could be wrong with that and how the heck is it possible without a software?

The thing is there are few types of software, thats where the general mislead comes from.

No - I don't think that you do. The software can sometimes simplify things making it faster finding duplicate titles or descriptions but you can also manually audit pages.

    I appreciate the replies.

And no, Mike Friedman, I didn't expect magic. I'm not naive nor new to running websites. I am hoping it may help me tweak my sites more.

I'm most skeptical sometimes of the advice given here because I'm not sure most of these people are making money off websites. Rather, they may be making money off of links in their signatures and such...but yet I do come here to get info and take most of the advice, I guess, with a grain of salt.

Well, I am making money as an SEO.

I find SpyGlass, especially, a great tool. It saves me so much time, money, and effort. I use it a lot for evaluating domains that I want to buy and also identify competitors best back links.

The website auditor is not bad, but I have found all website auditors to provide minimal actionable results. It can give a few decent tips and has some value for really large sites that you could never comb through by hand.

Link-assistant... unless you have a lot of arranged backlinks to keep track of, is not really that useful.

As far as desktop rank trackers go, I think Link-Assistant's and Advanced Web Ranking are the two best. Many rank trackers out there still have not even figured out how to track Google Places rankings, and it has been about 2 years since Google made that change.

If you need some help with them, let me know.

You could use Software for checking your ranks, which is good. If you are looking to build links links using software, then its a bad idea and will get your site into trouble.

Really? You are now saying this from your own experience or just suggesting/guessing/replicating other's thoughts?

It's not about the car, it's about the driver, it doesn't matter if you drive truck in the neighborhood, so long as the resident feel safe with you behind the wheel then you are good to go.

Just my little way of saying YES to some SEO software.

Not sure WHY you'd want software...even white hat stuff like Powersuite.

I'm ranking like mad and I haven't bought SEO software in my life.

SEO Power suite is great all-in-one tool. I especially like RankTracker. You would also like to try SEMrush for a different purpose.
Beside that, my opinion is you don't need any more pieces of paid software. Stick to your GA and GWT, and compare metrics with free accounts in various SEO tools such as SEOMoZ, MajesticSEO Screaming Frog, Wordtracker, etc....but most important - SEO PowerSuite. That is just my two cents...

Software differ. SEO PowerSuite doesn't contradict "manual SEO". One of the tools, SEO SpyGlass, collect all backlinks your competitors have built. You can't do it manually. And even if you could, what's the point of collecting data by hand?

Please note that SEO PowerSuite is NOT about manual submissions. It's about precise SEO data and actionable tips to help you craft your SEO strategy most efficiently.

There are some software out there that can help automate a lot of SEO work but don't expect it to work magic. There are effective ways of using the software and there are other ways of using that same software that will cause more harm than good

Automated Seo tools which are used for mass submission are bad for SEO.
SEO powersuite type tools are best to use because these type of tools guide you how to do the things in the right way and save your precious time.

      What makes you alleging that?

No offence but good tools in the bad hands can be a disaster.

Link Bait - ROFL, smells Cutts... I'm laughing out loud imagining how you gonna go link bait with niches like genital warts or yeast infection.

Haha, Matt Cutts is actually doing a great job, SEO troll 80lvl

Press releases - yes without a doubt this is immensely powerful little-known SEO technique that can alone get you TOP rankings and floods of traffic - definitely use it :p

All this reminds me some sort of SEO masochism...
