Why Won't My Post Rank?

Hi Warriors, seeking a little help if that's okay

So I'm trying to rank for the keywords:
"negotiation strategies"

Research shows the following:
Broad = 22,200 Global Searches
Exact = 4,400 Global Searches

Google search in quotes shows:
About 407,000 results

I realize it's probably all slightly higher than it should be. I went a head anyway and wrote an article for it optimizing as best I could - It's here on my blog.

I posted my link on social media and bookmarking websites along with several forums in the money saving niche. The post indexed in Google after 2 days and I was getting some traffic initially from my links. I submitted the article to ezine articles and goarticles too.

My problem is, it's been almost 3 weeks and when I enter the search term "negotiation strategies" I can't find my post even after 10 pages!!

I'm prepared to do everything I can to learn from my mistakes but at the moment I'm not entirely sure where I'm going wrong or where I need to concentrate my efforts next...

- Is it lack of backlinks?
- Is my optimization poor?
- Or are the keyword just too competative?

Any advice is welcome

    Try linking to the places where you put a copy of your post. Also, beef up your social mentions by using appropriate hashtags. Participate in retweet exchanges. Link to your url using goo.gl and use that for twitter.

    I'd also tighten up the subheadings and get the reader more engaged

    Is that enough to bump me to page 1 though?

    Simple: you need to build more quality links to that page:

      So that's all I need to do is work on building backlinks?

      Can backlinks alone really drive my post from page 27 to page 1 of google?

    Just a quick glance at this thread & I see a fail already, searching Global data for a local SERP position is the wrong way to research traffic volume. By local I mean country TLD/SERP.

    Also your US/SERP competition is stanford.edu (Stanford Graduate School of Business). Not sure what country/SERP your targeting? Good luck.

        Global search data is the wrong traffic numbers to be looking at. Google has individual search results for most countries (global), your not going rank in most countries which makes global data useless.

        The amount of traffic is usually very different between global & local, local is usually a lot less traffic.

    Retweets and Social bookmarking is the key here.

      Your not going to beat out stanford.edu with tweets/social anything.
