Does updating wordpress affect rankings?

I have top rankings for some high traffic keywords, and I noticed that wordpress has a new update available to v 3.5

Also one of my SEO plugins (Yoast) has an update available. My question is, because I already have top rankings, would I risk losing them by updating my version of Wordpress and/or Yoast's seo plugin?

It can be just the opposite. If you don't keep your site upadated that can work against you.

Keeping your WordPress version and plugins up to date is important from a security point of view.

However, always make sure you take a backup before doing any upgrade to WP just in case something goes wrong.

Good point. Last week I installed OptimizePress on my domain not realizing you should not install on the main domain, it ended up replacing my site theme. When I reactivated my site theme it was quite messed up. I ended up losing half of my traffic. And believe me when I say it was no coincidence. In the meantime, I got help on this forum that I had to install a second copy of wordpress in a subfolder into which Optimize Press would need to be installed. Today I restored to a backup from two weeks ago. I have therefore lost 2 weeks wroth of content but hopefully, it will bring the traffic back.

I am just hoping the traffic comes back because otherwise I will regret adding Optimize Press.

As for Wordpress update, you should because it keeps things more secure. However, do make a backup before proceeding.

If you have the page url for the lost content, google them (don't use the url in the browser, use it in the google search bar). Google will bring them up. To the left, if you hover at the very edge of the results, there's the shadow of an image, 2 arrows. Click on that, it opens up the Google cache for the page. Odds are good Google has not updated the cache yet.

You open the cache page and, at least for some of the pages, you'll be able to copy it, or right click, get the source code, copy that.

I believe it won't hurt your ranking once you update your WP version and even SEO plug-ins. Most of the updates are for security reasons and fixing bugs. I "third" the back up as well.

I don't think updating wordpress is related to SEO. I am very prompt in updating wordpress for my website, but have never seen negative results.

unless an update changes your content or content placement OR slows or breaks your site it will not have an impact.

Remove the Wordpress version from your theme header.php & you'll never get a message from WMT telling you the WP version is outdated.

Still has nothing to do with SEO as long as all that's changing is the WP version (on the front end).

Also make sure before you click update to check with your developer of the theme & plugins you are using so that you are sure the new version of Wordpress will work with your theme & plugins. Otherwise you may be in for a long weekend, trying to put it back. I talk to a lot of people that this happens to.
