How Did this Get to Number 1 in Google?

OK, I know the root domain has good PR, but get this...

Key phrase in Google.com without quotes: "Why You Should Learn How to Play Chess"

First result is a ThinkQuest Article. It barely has a Title, no meta keywords or description in site, totally unrelated URL and it has the smallest amount of content imaginable.

Yet, there it is, staring me in the face at Number 1.

I bet it has had zero shares as well - there isn't a social media icon in site.

What about my Chess Article?

In the words of a well known Australian Female Politician who used to run a Fish and Chip Shop...

"Please explain..."

Do you ever sit in front of your computer, wondering in vein how you might drop a link on a site like ThinkQuest?

I'll be honest. I do.

I'll explain. Domain name has nothing to do with PR. Okay maybe a little, but not a whole lot. Look up "social network" for example. Am I correct? There's a couple reason why that site is top. It's a page affiliated with Oracle, a highly authoritative site with 20k backlinks that are more or less of good quality. Yes, the site may look simple and unattractive, but the content does what it says and again, its backed by a very authoritative company.

This is the best explanation about the ranking of this site I think. Sometimes, getting the backup of a authority site can increase the ranking without any backlink.

All I can say is there are so many ranking factors aside from what you have mentioned and that's according to Matt Cutts.

Let's take for example the backlink. I did a quick backlink checking. According to backlinkwatch to your post "Your website has not backlinks to report. -- Go on .. and build backlinks first " compared to thinkquest which has 121 backlinks.

So, in this factor you clearly fall short.

So its obvious some quality dofollow backlinks with good PR can help your site some day take the number one spot.

OK, My Forum post was a little tongue in Cheek. I only published my post today - so I am not surprised it had not back links! But I was genuinely curious to figure out what the key factor was for ThinkQuests' glorious position.

Especially since the page in question had zero page rank.

It wasn't content. There's a lot of very competitive sites in that niche offering similar articles with a lot more content on the page.

It wasn't on Page SEO... well it certainly wasn't optimised according to the current SEO Gurus. Again, I am comparing it to competitive websites like Chess.com. When I publish on Chess.com my article title goes to number 1 in Google in under 10 minutes.

So, I was just curious as to what the Golden Ticket was, and it appears Jovykhan found it - Backlinks.

Next Question: How did this site get a PR6 with no back links at all?

That's a really old web page.

The page is in an iframe created by javascript & has a double Cache of the same page.

The page also has a PR2, not sure where you get that the page didn't have any PR.

I see quadcitychess at position #1 & thinkquest at position #2, at least you know both 1st & 2nd ranked pages aren't stable in the SERPs for your keyword. When you started this thread thinkquest was ranked #1.

Thanks Yukon. Yes, Think Quest was at number 1.. and soon we will be!

We looked at what you and Jovykhan had said and did a little back link research on Think Quest.

What we found was not that they had high PR backlinks but that they (among other things) had back links on pages with only a few outbound links to high auth sites mingled with theirs.

We decided to imitate some of what we thought were their strategies and immediately begun to see results.

We tested the theory on a new highly competitive keyword "cheap kids spy gear", for which we had absolutely no site history.

We imitated their strategy, wrote a couple of articles (Spy Gear For Kids - Latest Kids Spy Gadgets), did some backlinking and managed to start ranking in the SERPS on page 1 within four weeks.

We even overtook major domains in the process!!

So, I have you guys to thank for that since your comments set me on a new way of looking at link building.

It also testifies to the fact that Google still cares about our back links (even no follow ones).

So a Huge thank you to YOU.

That used to work on Youtube with playlist, create a playlist with all the most popular niche videos, then put your video in the 2nd position of the playlist.

Also works with surrounding anchor-text with plain text on the same page, example:

What exactly does this mean? Can someone explain this a bit clearer. Thanks.

I find myself reading this thread with all the responses and asking a very basic question

          Why?

The phrase gets no searches per month that I can see. Not broad, not exact not phrase.

From what I See the ranking of this site needs absolutely no explanation. Its a phrase with no traffic to speak of that has probably gotten more searches from this thread thzn has gotten all of December.

    Hi Davidtrounce,

I would say that you try to promote your article. It is not even cached yet. Let it get cached and also try to get some backlinks for your article.

Google has a bunch of magic words. This bunch includes How to ..., What is, How much is, How do I get and so on. If you use those phrases you get better results.

I think the point he is making is that getting backlinks on sites that also link to other authority sites maybe a good thing.
