This came about really quick, its for a local real estate/mortgage company. A friend works there and knows what i do. I helped him with his site and he is really impressed and mentioned me to his boss.

They want me to come in tomorrow afternoon to talk and discuss a fee to look over their sites and help them get traffic.

Not even sure what i should charge as it is so sudden.

Any ideas as to the going rate?

It really depends on how tough the niche is and the keywords you're aiming for.

If it's not too tough I would charge around $200-300 a month.

    Mortgages are pretty competitive.

I was going to do some basic stuff for them to start things like page title, keywords, description on page SEO and the basics. Nothing to crazy to start with.

Plus probably write some articles and submit them for them every month.

I wouldn't have thought it'll be too difficult to get a decent rank for local stuff, and you've always got Google local business listings to give you a boost.

How much is your work worth to the business?

You can't talk about fees until you get into a discussion of value.

One of my students has multiple ongoing SEO contracts for $5000+ a month.

His work is worth 5-10 times that much to the business so it's a great deal for both of them.

It depends on the ROI of the business you are going to optimize for. If you think that your optimization can greatly increase their revenue, why not ask for a certain %age of that revenue to go along with your monthly cost.

Cost estimation can vary but it is good to analyse the site before quoting the price.
I usually consider the following factors while quoting a price:

    1) Competitiveness of the keyword(s)
    2) ROI ratio for the business
    3) Age of the domain/business
    4) Current standings of the site

These are very broad guidelines but they do help to reach a reasonable estimate.
