What is the best criteria when persuing a niche market?

Hi there so I've been learning so much about niche market and keyword research. But I feel that there are so many questions unanswered.

Ok I think I found a niche by using google keyword tool has:

1300 [Exact] match monthly searches
Without quotes: 133000
With quotes: 559
inurl:"keyword" :39
intitle:"keyword" : 51
intext:"keyword" : 605

What I want to ask is, is this a good keyword to go for? When YOU do keyword research what is the maximum number of results you will accept before you persue a niche?

So lets say if with "quotes" right now is 559, will you still go for it if the number was 4357 or 1202?

Saying all that, these numbers are just numbers, how does one know he can beat the search results WITHOUT quotes?

If my keyword is "lost fat fast" and I type in "lose fat fast" without the quotes and the results may come up without having the keyword "lose fat fast". The first results might just have a highlighted word FAT and then the url word FAST might be bold. Other results are similar.

Now what should I look out for with these competing websites that come up organically without quotes? Cause they guys are coming up for the word FAT.

This is where my problems lie. I think I have a good keyword and the numbers all look good but I don't know whether I can beat the competition because I don't know what it takes to beat them.

So if you was to advise me, what are the numbers I should be looking for
keyword research and what factors should i look for the competing websites eg page rank, link etc.

Apologies for this long rant and I promise I will give back to the warriorforum for free when I'm successful. Thats a promise!

Thank you

Yes thats right. I want to use that keyword as the domain name and only promote that specific product. Its for physical products so I wont be using adsense or ads

    Thank you

Just a few questions before I answer:

I am assuming from your post that you are just getting started and would like to create a small site that ranks well in the search engines for your chosen keywords?

If this is the case then my advice is that you find a group of niche keywords rather than just one.

I am also guessing you want to monetise it with Adsense or affiliate ad's?

If you can get back to me with this info then I should be able to answer your question in full.
I'm not going to be doing any PPC. This is pure search engine niche marketing based on a keyword that I plan to use as the domain.

    Thank you

if it's high then you will most likely lose money at first.
You need to run your campaign for at least 7 days to gather stats.
You also must use tracking if you are doing affiliate offers.
But prepare to lose some money up front. If the CPC is $1.00 or more, i would try and find some cheaper keywords. I use my ppc keyword tool to generate cheap CPC keywords. I usually pay about 5 to 10 cents

The amount of pages for a specific phrase doesn't matter one bit. What matters is how much competition the front page of Google is going to be. Check the top three sites Page Rank. Is it over a page rank 3? Do they have the EXACT keyword in their title? (Is it Loose Fat Fast or Loose Your Belly Fat Fast), they are different keywords. Check the amount of links each has going to them, and see what the page rank is of the sites that link to them.

If you find the top 3-5 sites have low page ranks, a low amount of links ("low" is relative to how many resources you have to leverage, for some under 100 is low, for others under 1000 is low), and/or don't have the exact keyword in the title, then I'd go for it.

Focus your website on that specific keyword. Put that exact keyword in your title and in the meta description and in the meta tags. Put the exact keyword on your website and get a few decent links with that keyword in the anchor text.

With only 559 competing sites for the exact phrase, you can almost certainly get ranked for the term with a little work.

First thing I'd do after making the site is submit an article to EZA with the exact keyword and a link back to my site. It will rank fast, and get you traffic while you are getting your own site up and running.

That's a great post from Brawnydt,

Yep - When i'm researching keywords I always check the top 5 sites for a low PageRank and incoming links. But PR is only a guide, as are incoming links.

It also depends on the strength of the links your competetion has, if they have 100 low quality inbound links you could outrank them with a handful of good inbound links.

Another note: When you are checking Link popularity Yahoo is likely to be the most accurate guideline. Google will show very few incoming links for sites where as Yahoo tend to be more accurate.

You can use "MarketLeap" to check link popularity, and quality of incoming links.

Also - Don't just focus on your keyword stats - Try and make sure before you start that it is actually a "buying keyword". I know this sounds elementary but people often get distracted and forget this step.

If all this check out there's no reason you shouldn't rank for this keyword.
Remember to link back to your site with varied anchor text. As soon as you have some traffic stats be sure to use them. If people are finding your site using different keyword variations then get backlinks using those keywords also.

      Good Luck,

      John.
