Yes, linking to an authority site (eg: wikipedia) that is related to your keyword should help your rankings. Always remember to use the "No Follow" tag (rel="nofollow") when linking to an external site.

Complete BS. Voodoo SEO made up by some old man in a cave.

I can't believe the things that some people write. It's like they
don't even read what they post, because nobody could actually
say that with a straight face. Do you even know what nofollow is
actually for? If people believe that just by linking to an authority
site will increase their rankings, then man, the people here are
      just lost.

Or, your link will help Wikipedia outrank your page, considering your providing a one-way backlink to a relevant Wikipedia page.

Is Wikipedia already on the first SERP page for your keyword?

Google use wikipedia as knowledge graph data, beside that the information appear at left column has influence searches to make a click.

Think about it, this is what "naturally built" sites do all the time, they link to authoritative sites in the same niche with more information on the given topic.

If it's natural, then it will help to make your site more "friendly" in the eyes of Google.

As Julia said, doing that alone will not really make any difference to your rankings, but it's just another on page SEO strategy that is going to help overall....
