are coupon sites bad for seo?

I noticed that when I post coupons on coupon sites, I get a quick boost in my seo, great for seasonal businesses. Does anyone have any info if google (post panda, penguin) penalizes for these type of links?

  • Well, I guess Google will not punish coupon sites links just because they are from coupon sites.

    It depends on the links and on the site itself. In other words, the quality and quantity of links matters first.

  • Yeah, they aren't gonna penalize you simply for having coupons on your site. If your site is ridden with paid/unnatural links, crappy content, and little contextual value, you likely won't rank.

    You can always drive traffic to those pages with PPC though. Which obviously costs money. Not sure what your strategy is.

    I think you'll get good traffic for coupons people want. One way or another. SE, Social, etc.

    • The idea is not so much to get traffic from the coupon site per se, (not that I wouldn't mind) but rather to get a few good links to bump me up right before my busy season. I was ranking #4 last week, but then I fell to #13. It's very possible that it is only a temporary fall as google aligns some new players, but as
      my season starts in about a month, I can't take any chances.
