SEO: Text before your first <h1> tag?

I don't want to debate about keyword density and over-optimization rules of thumb. Obviously for SEO we want to put the kw in the <h1> tags on our site, and then in the article, etc.
My question is this: If I have a paragraph BEFORE the first <h1> tag. Is this going to affect how bots read the page?
I like to put a "feature box" at the top of my pages that links visitors to the site's best resources/product and right now I'm doing this with an Photoshop image(not readable to bots). I just place it above the page's article. Could I just do this with text or do you think it would hurt?
