SEO Description in SERPs

Right now I'm using Wordpress and my sites show up in the SERPs with the <title > tag's text for the clickable link(obviously) and then the first few sentences from the article on the page is displayed under that. Is there a way to make this "description" area different from what is displayed in my actual article? I want to optimize the CTR.

Will thank for responses
Kyle

    You need to put a customized meta description

    <meta name="description" content="Custom message here">

    but since you are using WP you can install plugins like All In One SEO pack and other similar plugins.

      FYI....sometimes google will ignore your title meta description and put what they want.

        You can use All In One SEO or (my preference) Wordpress SEO plugin by Yoast. They both give you the opportunity to *suggest* what you'd like to have displayed in your description. You can also change the title of the page, which I do on most of my pages.
