Good day warriors,

I'm hoping someone with knowledge of SEO can help me answer this newbie question.

Fresh, quality, relevant content is one of the foundations to having good SEO. Does this content have to be on the Home Page? Can I add fresh, quality articles to a sub-page of my website and still get the same SEO value as if it was on the Home Page? Is there a difference at all or does Google put more value if it's on the Home Page?

Thanks in advance

It is better to NOT be on the home page. Each page of content is another page for Google to list.

Sometimes Google likes when you update the homepage with new/fresh/additional information.. It works well on the "microniche" sites... However, if you have legit authority site and you don't want to change the main page then new articles to the subdirectories are OK as well until they are unique.

Absolutely - And you should even. Google ranks pages, not "sites".

In fact, if all your links would go to the HP, it would look rather unnatural. Look at other sites. Where do the links on WF, Wickipedia, CNN or whatever other site go? People link to the content, the URLs with the posts.

You can have a site with any number of sub pages (posts), and each sub-page can rank for keywords. You could have a weight-loss site where one article on your site on a sub-page ranks for "grapefruit diet", another one for "diet tips". On your HP, you *could* have only a few excerpts where you show the latest articles in short form or a sales page or just another article which might go well as your HP.

I think your considering too much how to setup the site for SEO versus the user experience. Would a user want to go to a page and see several different topics? Or would they like to go to a page and see exactly what they were searching for? Obviously the latter.

Figure out what keywords you are targeting and make those pages on your site. If you have one primary keyword you can make that the target of your home page.

Don't get caught up in having to write X number of words to satisfy Google's desires. Google doesn't require a certain volume of content, it requires a certain relevancy of content.

So make your page relevant to the keyword, focus on the user experience and conversion.

Of course, the main idea is to add quality content "in different pages" of your website, where you can use your desired keywords.

For the homepage content, you are free to add/update it to any extent but adding pages (which is your main question here) is a "big MUST" if you want to well-optimize your website. Afterall, site size also counts as a ranking factor; right!

@LloydMS has pointed a good thing here. Other than quality, your content must also be user-centered and not search-engine (robot) centered. Write (or hire a good writer for) natural and unique articles (not spunned).

    Good luck...

It depends on your content. But if you want to update your homepage is up to you. But make sure you will make it as relevant as possible and able to provide good information for users.
